Usually, for furniture, there are two ways to track history: through things like style and influence (if you don't know what I mean, check out an episode of "Antiques Roadshow" sometime), and through scuffs, scratches, nicks, and dents. At Context Furniture, husband and wife Bryce and Kerry Moore have come up with a new way to show the history of your furniture. This time, though, it's not the provenance of the items that matters--it's their history as produced objects. Each piece in the Narrative line from Context is made of layers of Baltic birch plywood (strong and stylish both), which remind you that someone made this furniture. Even better, they made it to look great--every piece has a strip of hardwood incorporated into the plywood stack. The combination of mass production and handiwork is exciting and interesting, and the look of the pieces is excellent. See less

The success of his chairs inspired Benjamin - a New York-based architect and multi-disciplinary designer - to create a coordinating table, the Cherner Table (2004). Introduced at ICFF, the table echoes the curved plywood lines of the chairs. Lightweight, but strong, the Cherner Table has a solid core of multi-ply beech wood, overlaid with a walnut veneer. Decades after creating his Taraxacum S2 (1960), Achille Castiglioni updated his own design with the introduction of his Taraxacum "88" Suspension Lamp (1988). Taraxacum is the scientific name for the plant commonly known as dandelion, but unlike a weed that can become a lawn pest, the Taraxacum '88 is sculptural art that provides direct and reflected light. Hanging from a steel ceiling rose, the structure is made of 20 pressed and polished aluminum triangles that reflect the light of 60 clear globes. Almost like a reversed version of the original Taraxacum, which hid the bulbs under a transparent diffuser, the Taraxacum '88 celebrates the play of reflection and light. The lamp has a satisfying balance between the contrasting shapes of the round bulbs and triangular backdrops, as well as in its mixture of warm incandescent light and cool aluminum.
