I searched for a book that would teach me beginning HTML, XHTML and CSS with no tutor. I knew a little HTML from trial and error in my personal ebay auctions. This book is certainly a great choice! The teaching order and examples really helped me to understand these topics and where to go for many additional resources. I would highly recommend this book interested in learning about beginning XHTML and CSS. There are many errors in the book chapters, examples and tests. The book comes with a download from the website that is used for exercises in the book. Apparently there must have been more than one set of examples or someone other than the author set them up. There are some mismatches in what the book says and what the downloads actually look like. I found the errors to be a challenge to correct, so I really didn't mind that so much. The other... This book not only gives you the latest in cutting edge design and graphics, but it also does a good job of covering the world over. UK, Croatia, USA, Denmark, Germany, Australia, Austria, Canada, The Netherlands to name a few. Inside it is broken out into: Printing Techniques Manipulated Surfaces Formats and Binding Add-Ons Unique Materials Graphic Devices and a nice index by agency. Each photo is a studio shot of the actual product, not a reprint from file. In some you see hands holding the brochure open or a page curled open. Very high quality shots of the actual finished product, and artistically done, as well. I give it a big thumbs up for presentation value, inspiring choices and for it being edge to edge, chock-full of pictures and no lengthy write-ups on how the artist milled the paper herself from the hair of a Burmese goat or other such unnecessary drivel. Much of Universal Principles of Design lacks depth. The reason for this is that the text needed more colloboration than it appears to have asorbed. For something that aspires to be a sort of objective compendium, the topics (and particularly the examples used) are grounded firmly within the author's sphere of knowledge. I correctly guessed both where the authors lived as well as their occupations long before I had finished reading merely because they use so many examples from Houston and software. Unfortunately, this lack of research and colloboration outside of the two authors and their own knowledge creates a shallow, uninformed book. Universal Principles of Design is far less academic and objective than it proports. For example, if I had based one of my principles on an example I would have researched it beyond merely using internet heresay (DVORAK v. QWERTY, for example). What a strange publication. Divided into two sections the first explaining grid formatting with actual printed material and the second revealing how to design print without a grid. There seems a contradiction here because the grid, used intelligently, will allow a whole range of graphic options to be presented with clarity. Some of the print examples reproduced in the first section do show this with perhaps the most useful item a grid thumbnail for each piece, unfortunately I thought it was rather too small on each spread despite being the key to explaining each format. From past experience, designing magazines, I would start work on a grid by concentrating on the text type size because it is the least flexible of all the elements on the page. This point really wasn't made enough of in the book's chapter: Grid Basics. After buying this book (and being lucky enough to have it signed by the author!) I just couldn't wait to flip through it's pages and find out what inspires my heroes in the world of graphic design. I love the format the author has chosen for the interviews and being able to get a sneak peak into the designers' studios and see what inspires them. This book will remain a timeless addition to my bookshelf and I know I'll refer to it when I get stuck or need a bit of inspiration myself. Reading this book is not a total waste of time and money, but pretty close. If you must, I recommend getting this one from the local library to at least eliminate the financial loss. To be fair, the first 100 pages is a readable autobiographical reminder of an often preached but rarely practiced warning. Life is short. Do not spend every day in a job you hate to buy things you do not need. The author recommends reading Walden. Thoreau, the classic American minimalist, covered all the same material far more eloquently 150 years ago. So why not read Thoreau instead? Good question. The rest of the book is essentially a money making plan for white collar workers who hate their jobs. If Mr. Ferriss had restricted this book to a discussion of how to eliminate unproductive efforts from the workplace and shorten the workweek for everyone, he could have written a much briefer and significant book. The cool thing about this book is it answers every question you ever had about using the internet, and the cooler thing is it answers questions you wished you ask. The tone is breezy - never boring or didactic. There's a lot in here for web neophytes and a lot for people that consider themselves web experts. You can tell the author's labour of love is getting the most out of the internet, and he's filtered that love into a mind opening reference book. It'll be next to my computer for a long time. I'd heard about this guide on websites devoted to scrapbooking, and when I finally tracked it down, I almost didn't buy it. I looked at it and thought, "What the heck?" It is pages and pages of color combinations, arranged according to color groupings, with suggested "moods," like "retro." So what? I thought. However, my respect for the work of those who'd recommended it overcame my initial doubts. As a designer in paper arts, I tend to get into my color ruts, and choose the same basic color combos. "Color Index" has helped me break out of my rut in a couple of different ways. Sometimes, when I just don't feel inspired, I'll simply sit down with the book and page through it, tabbing color combinations I find interesting or appealing. Later, when I'm working in my studio, I'll take a look at the tabbed combos for ideas I can use. Other times, I may know of one color I want to use for a design, but am stuck for accents to use.
