Highlighted in the Cold War Modern: Design 1945-1970 exhibition, the Ball Chair designed by Eero Aarnio in 1966, was the first in a pioneering new line of fibreglass pieces by the designer. Eero Aarnio studied at the Institute of Industrial Arts in Helsinki. In 1962, Aarnio started his own office of industrial and interior design, where he created fun and functional design, and today he is known for his pioneering use of new materials. In 1966, the Ball Chair was presented at the international furniture fair in Cologne. The Ball Chair (or Globe Chair as it is also known) creates the effect of a room within a room and was the sensation of the fair. Made in fibreglass with a leather interior, the design made an international breakthrough for Eero Aarnio and resulted in Aarnio producing an entire line of fibreglass pieces.
