Although this jam-packed little volume is small enough to slip in your knitting/crochet basket, it holds enough information to rival larger books. Practical tools and suggestions fill the book as well as illustrations that are easy to understand (for me and I've been crocheting a long time). In case you forget the difference between the double crochet and the half-double crochet, the book includes example of those and other basic stitches as well as more ornate procedures such as making a popcorn stitch. One set of pages covers making Granny squares including `Granny square triangles' and other forms of the popular pattern. The book is printed in black and white and may not appeal to those who are color dependent. The pages are heavy with clear plastic surfaces which makes them easy to clean and long wearing, but hard to flip through if you are looking for something specific. The really lovely compilation of so many lacy looking patterns. So many beautiful......well, you get the idea. Once home with my treasure, I was not dissapointed one bit! I have only had this book a few weeks and already I have made several shawls based on patterns within it's wonderful covers. With summer coming, it is an extra bonus to have a large choice of open patterns styles to work with in those lucsious summer yarns I have in my ever expanding stash. You know how much of a pain in the neck it can be to sew and sew and sew, especially if you decided to be nutty and made all _tiny_ granny squares to sew together. This book has patterns that do not need to be sewn together. You can use your crochet hook to finish it up. No more "pincher aches" in the thumb and forefinger from sewing. No more trying to weave in the gazillion loose ends. The designs are good for beginners as well as intermediate crocheters. They are clear and concise. The sizing (surprise!) is good for the Boticelli women among us. You don't have to feed your family beans for the rest of their lives to buy the yarn for the projects, so that's great. This is an admirable book on the basics of crocheting. The pictures explaining the stitches are unusually clear and the explanations are well written. There are also sections on yarns, hooks, finishing and care, as well as very useful descriptions of various accessories that are available. One cavil - the author recommends using safety pins as stitch markers. I don't like regular metal safety pins as the thread often gets caught in the spring - at least make sure that you are using non-rusting pins! Better still, there are plastic safety pins that don't have a spring. There are patterns featuring different types of crochet: granny squares, flowers, circular.
