Tesla, Daimler To Partner...

Tesla Motors Inc. and Daimler AG said Tuesday they are developing an electric Smart microcar, with plans to initially make 1,000 of the vehicles available near the end of this year. Tesla CEO Elon Musk said his San Carlos-based electric carmaker has... See more more

Highlights: "If the 1,000-vehicle fleet is a success and the economics make sense and the product is compelling, that will expand to tens of thousands of vehicles per year," Musk told the Society of Automotive Analysts at a meeting coupled with the North American International Auto Show. "Daimler is...

Musk said the deal with Daimler was nonexclusive and Tesla was looking to establish more strategic relationships with other automakers. "We believe in cooperative strategic partnerships and only doing a few of them," Musk said, rejecting reports of a "Silicon Valley versus Detroit" rivalry in the auto industry. "Nothing can be further from the truth. We've actively sought to work with major car companies to supply them with electric powertrain technology," Musk said.

LA goes electric

See this at: government.zdnet.com| Added on 11/29/08

The cool, green car at the LA Auto Show appears to be the Cooper Mini E – a zero-emissions car designed to comply with California’s zero-emissions standards.

Highlights: According to AFP, the car will go 150 miles on a charge (that gets me just about to San Francisco and back) and recharges in less than three hours with a special wall unit. The Mini E runs on lithium ion batteries.

Comments (1)

While the Mini runs lithium ion batteries, Hyundai is using lithium polymer for a new gen of hybrid vehicles, deemed “Blue Drive.” By 2015, Hyundai says its entire fleet will do 35mpg. And in a green gimmick, Hyundai will link donations to reforestation efforts in Brazil’s rainforest to sales of its luxury Genesis Sedan. Even more gimmicky, Ford Fusion drivers will get a tree icon on their dashboards, which sprouts leaves when you drive modestly and loses leaves when floor it.

GM shows off hydrogen Sequel BMW's announcement comes on the heels of General Motors on Monday unveiling a driveable version of the Chevrolet Sequel, a hydrogen fuel cell SUV that it called "the most technologically advanced automobile ever built." GM said the Sequel "is the first vehicle in the world to successfully integrate a hydrogen fuel cell propulsion system with a broad menu of advanced technologies such as steer- and brake-by-wire controls, wheel hub motors, lithium-ion batteries and a lightweight aluminum structure." The Sequel can go 300 miles before refueling, GM said, well beyond the industry standard of 150 miles. And it does 0-60 in 10 seconds, the carmaker said.

Soaring gas prices, economic crises, wars, omnipresent pollution, irreversible changes in the climate… Our world is going through a period when the stakes in terms of energy form the very basis for worldwide chaos. While admitting that no solution for energy production can be perfect, we must become fully aware of the imperative need to limit our own personal consumption of energy. Eclectic, the first autonomous vehicle in the history of the automobile, opens up a new era in the field of mobility : reserved for daily driving in urban areas, its low energy consumption makes it the most economical environmental vehicle ever built. Innovative and astonishing, Eclectic is much more than a simple vehicle ; it is a production and storage plant for renewable energies, either solar or wind based. Charging of these energies, which is intermittent in certain regions, can also be complemented by electrical recharging.

The proposal would set the amount of ethanol and other alternative fuels to be blended into the fuel supply at 35 billion gallons by 2017, up from 7.5 billion gallons in 2012. The standard would be expanded beyond ethanol to include oil alternatives such as biodiesel, methanol, butanol and hydrogen, officials said. In June, the heads of GM, Ford and DaimlerChrysler AG said by 2010 they would double their production of "flexible fuel" vehicles capable of running on ethanol blends of 15 percent gasoline and 85 percent ethanol.
