Far too often we recognize that proposition (both spouses are sinners) to be a true theoretically true statement, but practically we act as if the other is the greater sinner. Harvey flips this on its head: I must go into marriage (indeed, into all relationships, recognizing that I am the worst sinner that I know). Then, after recognizing sin, we can see the solution to sin: The gospel of the free grace of God, a gospel that saves from sin, but also a gospel that provides the power for ongoing forgiveness of sin and power over sin. (04/04/08) I enjoy Jerry Bridges books. His classic book THE PURSUIT OF HOLINESS was one of the best books I have ever read on holiness and the Christian's call to live a holy life (1 Peter 1:15-16). This book by Jerry Bidges falls in line with THE PURSUIT OF HOLINESS in that it calls the believer to live a holy life but it also confronts our sins that we often gloss over in taking aim at the "larger" sins. This book will two two things that I believe are key to the disciple. First, the book opens by showing us the gospel of Jesus Christ and what God has done for us to help us to be people of holiness. Bridges reminds us that holiness is not something we can obtain on our own since our flesh wars against the Spirit (Galatians 5:16-17). Bridges shows that the way to holiness is not in rules of religion but only by the grace of God given to us freely in Christ (Titus 2:11-14). (03/30/06) John Leadly Dag: the first Southern Baptist to write a systematic theology. For those who love theology, these books are a treasure among treasures. It is amazing to me after reading such theologies as James P. Boyces' "Abstract of Systematic theology" or Francis Turretins' "Institutes of Elenctic Theology," that Dagg is able to express such depth of theological understanding in such an easy to read and comprehensive way. This work is to be applauded for more than just it's theological content, but also for the genius with which it was written. This work becomes even more profound when one realizes that Dagg wrote these books when he was virtually blind. He had an easle built with an adjustable hand prop which guided his hand streight across the page, at the end of a line, he would turn the handle and it would bring his hand down to the next line where he would resume writing. This epitomizes faithfulness to Christ and His church in a way which is seldom witnessed in today's society. I... See less
