You've taken a class or two at school, you've learned kana and you've got a kanji dictionary so you're all set, right? Not so fast. If you've ever picked up a real Japanese comic (manga) you've probably realized that spoken Japanese is very different (and downright incomprehensible) from what you're learning in the textbook. Well, this book is what you need. Forget "Japanes in Mangaland" and all the other cutesy manga related Japanese titles. They're just basic Japanese texts gussied up with a few pretty pictures. This book uses real manga strips to illustrate key grammar points. The author also goes into detail with each panel so you get vocabulary and cultural references. And while the manga strips aren't the most current Shonen Jump, they are interesting. Bottom line: if you want to read manga, get this book. If you're doing Ok in Japanese but are still fuzzy on some of the casual, spoken constructions, get this book. I wish it had been around a few years ago when I first started... See less

This series of language books is the best I own. I have university textbooks for both Italian and Japanese. As usual they are comprehensive, but dry and impossible to use for self study. I purchased the Japanese for Busy People books, but found them also to be dry and difficult for self study. But the Japanese in Mangaland series is amazingly entertaining. I have found that my motivation to study and comprehension of the language have both increased since buying these books. The main reason this series succeeds where others fail is that it is truly geared toward the self studier. The grammar is presented in simple stages along with plenty of examples. Vocabulary in introduced slowly and in line with the grammar. But, the most compelling aspect is the examples are all drawn :) from manga. No prior knowledge of Japanese is required and this book can be used alone or in conjunction with other study methods and aids. Like the defunct magazine "Mangajin" which has been collected in anotholgies and is offered for sale through Amazon as "Basic Japanese Through Comics", "Japanese in Mangaland" uses manga to aid language learning. However, there's an important distinction between the two approches. Whereas the "Mangajin" anthologies focus on providing instruction to facilite understanding manga as an end in itself through the presentation of several sequential panels, "Japanese in Mangaland" uses individual manga panels merely as tools to further the language instruction. They are a waste of money unless you are unable to learn anything and need the tiny pict-o-graph book to remind you ever time you read. (it's tiny and does not explain anything properly). Just get this, his hiragana and kanji books, and "Kanji ABC: A Systematic Approach to Japanese Characters" and writing is well covered (short of indepth college junk). his book isn't perfect but common sense should adequatly cover any of his short comings, but i could see how it could confuse someone especially children. The book doesn't go into much detail and the material just seemed to be geared towards kindergarteners. 1. The first half of the book: tracing all the kana. For the writting practices all you have to do is trace the dotted (well, grayed-in) lines; it may seem nice, but it's not very helpful for learning and remembering them. Think about it, when you're learning to draw, what's more helpful? tracing things over and over, or looking at an image and trying to recreate it on your own? the first method is merely mindless repetition while the second uses active learning which involves more of your brain to learn the characters. 2.The second half of the book: words and pictures. Another thing makes you feel like a two year practicing with this book is the pitures used.
