These I/O operations are similar to the buffer I/O operations; however, they have already been designed to use read retry logic to try to resolve similar issues. The additional diagnostics explained in this article do not apply to these I/O operations. As long as your application is in the preproduction phase, the hardware reserved for production can be used as a stress test environment. You must use this time as efficiently as possible. One thing you can do in an early phase is testing your disk subsystem. The disk subsystem is in many ways the most important subsystem you should concentrate on during performance tests. * Adjustable: CPU's and memory can be adjusted once your server is up and running. Changing your disk configuration is much harder to do. * Experience: From my experience disk IO are the most common performance bottlenecks. * Timing: A thorough investigation of CPU or memory usage is often very application related, which means you can only start them after you have a working version of your application available. This is not required to test your disk subsystem; there are some very valuable tools available for benchmarking your disk subsystem even before SQL Server is installed. UPDATE: Microsoft has found an issue with the final build of SP4 that impacts customers who run SQL Server with AWE support enabled. This problem does not affect ia64 platforms. On x86 and x64 systems, the problem only impacts customers with more than 2 gigabytes (GB) of memory (available only with the Enterprise, Developer, and Evaluation editions) where AWE has been enabled and more than half of the total system memory is being allocated to a single SQL Server instance. Customers with this configuration should obtain and apply the hotfix specified in article 899761 of the Microsoft Knowledge Base after upgrading to SP4. See less
