Istalif has long been known for its traditional crafts. Its potters are getting back on their feet, with the help of the Turquoise Mountain Foundation. Abundant Beauty New York based designer and artist Alice Simpson takes us on a journey to the past when 'Fat Folk' were regular performers on the traveling carnival circuit. Her coil built figurative sculptures are inspired by postcards and other souvenirs from circus and carnival sideshows. The Onggi Potters of Korea Onggi are traditional Korean earthenware vessels, used for the storage of pickled vegetables, bean pastes and soy sauces. Undaunted by the unavailability of adult size bunny slippers I decided to make my own just like McGuyver would do if bunny slippers could be made from Duct tape. I had considered Titanic slippers for my enormous size 10US/41EUR feet but I couldn't control my lust for bunny cuteness. :) So, should you wish to make a pair for yourself, it's pretty easy to do. I. Materials * A pair of boiled wool slippers from Garnet Hill [ product #4664 ] * 2 black 1-1.5 inch pom-pons * Felt for ears in a matching colour to slippers and pink. I used needled cotton batting for the ears since I couldn't find any nice wool felt. * 20 guage copper wire for bendy ears * 1 skein of black DMC crewel thread * 1 skein of pink DMC embroidery thread * 1 skein of ecru or dark grey embroidery thread to match slipper colour * 1 crewel needle * 1 embroidery needle * 1 pencil or fabric pencil * 1 pair of scissors * 1 tube Goop Crafter's contact adhesive * a couple of pins * Take pom-pon and attach it to the back of the... You never know what chance meeting will change your life. My name is Scott Rench and some time around 1992 I met a graphic design major named Larry Geiger while attending graduate school. This chance meeting would have a profound affect on my life. Larry told me about this program called Photoshop and all the things he was able to do. I was so intrigued by the process, when I saw the computer and all the things he could do I was hooked. I really wanted to explore this computer thing. It was not until a Christmas break, when the chair of the art department, gave me his building key, that I got to really sit in front of the computer. For the next 30 days me and my friend Jim would spend 15 or more hours a day in front of the computer. It was during this time that I taught myself Photoshop, Illustrator and QuarkXpress, to this day about 90% of what I know I learned during those 30 days. This chance meeting would open a career in advertising and shape the direction of my artwork. My... See less

I have always been a people watcher. In the first grade I did not play with the other kids. I stood back and watched. And I have been watching ever since. I watch what people do and imagine what they might like to do. Life and society are such that we cannot always say and do what we like. However, in the imaginary world in which my ceramic people live, they can. At the dawn of mankind primitive peoples fashioned clay objects. They sculpted about what they knew and wanted. Pregnant women and animals were the hot topics of the day. I think of my work much the same way. Though the topics may be different I feel a link to those old people sitting around playing with this beautifully plastic material. See less

Cera-Mix Studios produces the highest quality, most original, best designed and executed dinnerware and tile available anywhere. Every historic piece of pottery seen in museums today was made for and taken to market where, once purchased, it was passed down from one generation to the next until it landed in a museum -- an archaeological find, a window to the past. We hope to carry on the tradition. See less

My sculptures of the Beatles are in this book which just came out now! Click here to order it here. Boxigami Books is pleased and excited to announce our latest book release: "Beatles Art: Fantastic New Artwork of the Fab Four" The music of the Beatles helped define the 1960's, and inspired not only musicians, but artists of the day who captured the spirit of John, Paul, George, and Ringo in their artwork. The Beatles continue to inspire artists, and some of the best examples of these images have been compiled by Boxigami Books. The new art book is scheduled for release in August, 2006, and will feature new art inspired by the Beatles and their music. It showcases some of the best new artists and illustrators from different regions of the globe all demonstrating their creativity on topics such as the Beatles music and lyrics. What is Raku? Raku is a Japanese inspired method of firing that creates unpredictable smoke patterns and spectacular metallic and crackle effects in the glazes. After initially firing the piece in a kiln, it is glazed and fired a second time. When the temperature of the piece reaches between 1600 and 1800 degrees and the glaze has melted, the piece is placed in combustible materials (leaves, sawdust and pine needles) in a metal container and covered. This is called post reduction during which the oxygen is burned out of the glaze taking the colorants back to a metal producing the metallic lusters seen in raku. See less
