The Matchmaker

Marcy Tizard (Janeane Garofalo) is an assistant to Senator John McGlory (Jay O. Sanders), a congressman from Boston in the midst of a hard-fought reelection campaign. Nick (Denis Leary), one of McGlory's advisors, thinks that it might mean some extra... See more more

One of my top 5 favorite movies of all time. Janeane Garofalo is superb, and the extended cast are really wonderful. There are many gems in this movie -- Marcy's politician boss smiling through the limo window and waving at reporters while saying through his teeth, "When I'm elected, I'm going to have you all shot." Marcy calmly making a call from her Irish hotel, "Hello? I'd like to make a call to Boston from the smallest fucking hotel room in the world." Especially wonderful: Denis Leary as the senator's smarmy campaign manager and Milo O'Shea as the town's leading matchmaker. You'll watch this movie again and again.

The American President

See this at: video.barnesandnoble...| Added on 03/10/07

This earnest, intelligent, and well-written romantic comedy is enjoyable and optimistic in classic Hollywood style, even if its idealism doesn't seem quite so credible against the cynical political backdrop of the Nineties. President Andrew Shepherd... See more more

Aaron Sorkin wrote this screenplay before he did West Wing, and the similarities are evident, although this one is much more romantic. It's also another gem from Rob Reiner, one of my favorite directors.

Evelyn

See this at: video.barnesandnoble...| Added on 03/10/07

One man takes on the Irish family law system and the Catholic Church in a bid to be reunited with his children in this drama, based on a true story. In 1953, Desmond Doyle (Pierce Brosnan) was a house painter and decorator who, despite a strong work... See more more

Another one of my top 5 movies. A gripping true story that changed Ireland, Evelyn stars Pierce Brosnan, the quintessential Irishman, and features the wonderful Sophie Vavasseur in the title role. Also starring Julianna Margulies, Aidan Quinn (yum) and Alan Bates. Great cast, great score. This one will make you smile through your tears.

When Harry Met Sally

A great romantic comedy that can be enjoyed by both men and women is a rare treat. This film is one of those rareties. Director Rob Reiner has us laughing at each other as well as ourselves in this story that lovingly highlights the inner workings of... See more more

Classic, classic, classic. Watch it with the director's commentary and hear all the background of the making of the film. I usually find the commentaries a little boring, but Rob Reiner is great. Wonderful score of oldies and Harry Connick, Jr.

Harrison Ford at his most yummy, Sigorney Weaver at her most hate-able, and Melanie Griffith in huge shoulder pads: what's not to like? Mike Nichols directed this Cinderella story for the 80's, and it shows. He is one of the truly great directors.

Meg Ryan's last movie without injected lips. She's wonderful and cute, as is Heather Burns. Dave Chapelle makes himself known with wonderful delivery of only a very few lines, Dabney Coleman and Parker Posey are right on the money in their roles, but the West Side is the most important supporting cast member in the movie.

Lady Jane

Helena Bonham Carter's first movie, Lady Jane tells the story of Lady Jane Grey, the victim of viscious Tudor politics. At the age of fifteen, Jane, who had been groomed to marry Henry VIII's son, Edward VI, is married instead to the son of the Duke of Northumberland. Thence the drama begins. Jane was the most erudite of the Tudors, and her story is a classic tragedy. This is a beautiful movie. Patrick Stewart does a great job as Jane's father, a pompous, ambitious man who preferred hunting and politics to home and hearth.

What do you get when you add great music to Grace Kelly, Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Celeste Holm (who is a total bitch, by the way--I met her once--but I digress...) and the legendary Louis Armstrong? You get a musical remake of an already formidable classic (the Philadelphia Story) that is classy, fun, and absolutely memorable.

Keeping the Faith

Sadly, I believe this was the last movie for Anne Bancroft. Both she and Eli Wallach are as superb as ever in this film. I don't always like Ben Stiller, but he is wonderful in this -- much more subtle than usual. And don't you just want to pinch Edward Norton? He is so cute.

John Brown is a servant to Prince Albert, beloved husband of Queen Victoria. The Queen is in the throes of mourning for her husband far longer than is good for her or the monarchy. John sees this and against all propriety steps in to snap her out of it. Hilarity does not ensue as her family, the government, and the public are scandalized by the friendship.

France during World War I, a beautiful couple, and sometimes-really-good music by Henry Mancini. When I was 11, I thought this was the most romantic movie ever. I still enjoy it now, but understand why Hollywood ran Blake Edwards out of town on a rail after he made it.
