When Gemstar, Inc., bought Nuvomedia, the makers of the Rocket eBook, there was a lot of misplaced optimism that they’d do great things for eBooks. Instead, they priced their successor to the Rocket eBook, the REB, higher than the Rocket—$250 if memory serves—and crippled the REB so you couldn’t put your own content on it, a limitation that alone ensured the its demise in the market. Andersen’s tale “Danish Popular Legends” was first published in The Riverside Magazine for Young People, Vol. IV, pp. 470-474, New York, October 1870. It has never been published in Denmark. The hypertext is based on an etext found in the Andersen Homepage of the Danish National Literary Archive. It may be somewhat surprising to learn that a number of Andersen’s tales were published in America even before being published in Andersen’s native Denmark. According to Jean Hersholt’s introduction to The Andersen-Scudder Letters, University of California Press, 1949, ten tales were published by Horace Elisha Scudder, Andersen’s American editor, publisher and translator, in the above mentioned Magazine, in the years 1868-1870. Thanks to Mike Eschman for most computer-generated eBooks, to AudioBooksForFree.com for our Arthur Conan Doyle series of human readings, and to LiteralSystems.org for work on new readings by volunteers. We are also working with Librivox, with a similar effort to get people volunteering to read. Please consider joining them! Our listings are divided into two categories. We are still adding new audio eBooks read by people, primarily through work by LiteralSystems.org and Librivox. However, we have stopped adding computer-generated eBooks. Instead, we are working on methods to automatically make computer-generated eBooks on demand (that is, by choosing options, then getting the file within a short time).
