These new, fitted gowns adopted a variety of both simple and dramatic sleeve shapes, and although they fell out of fashion in the 13th century, were forerunners to the fitted dresses that would reappear in the 14th. We have chosen a design for the lady that was popular during the youth of the redoubtable Eleanor of Aquitaine (1150s – 1160s) for its combination of style and comfort. Within a few years a full train was added, Queen Eleanor, wife of Henry III of England, becoming so fond of the fashion that not only did it trail behind her, but the front was equally long, requiring her to carry the front of the surcoat in her hand or risk falling. The exact nature of these earliest garments is unknown, but by the 13th century, the man’s tunic had evolved into a simple, relatively short, white linen shirt. Unfortunately, the exact nature of women’s undergarments is far less clear; women generally being depicted in period illuminations either fully clothed or stark naked. What is clear is that some sort of undergarment was worn, and it had to be designed to work with the tight sleeved gowns and cotehardies fashionable amongst 14th century ladies. An answer may be found in the Bohemian King Wencesclaus IV Bible (c.1400), which depicts repeated examples of serving women at work, stripped to a simple, sleeveless chemise.
