Thank you to everyone who requested a shrinkydinks ring tutorial! I hope this will answer all your questions. Please leave me a comment if you have any questions etc, or link to pictures of your own rings! I’ll answer some questions from the comments on my previous shrinky rings post before I get started, and add more hints and tips throughout the tutorial. Shrink plastic, for the uninitiated, was originally marketed as a toy for kids. It starts life thin and flexible. You draw on it and then bake it in the oven, and it shrinks to become about 1/3 of the starting size, but 9 times as thick. This thickness makes it strong and hard. It will not bend after baking, so if you try to pull your ring open, or stand on it, it may snap, but it is strong enough to withstand regular use as a ring. The last step (bending the ring into shape) is the most difficult, so I highly recommend that 1) you read through all the instructions before starting, and 2) practice on a blank piece of shrink plastic... Supplies * latex primer * latex paint (I used Benjamin Moore Aura in Steam [AF-15]) * craft glue (I used Mod Podge in matte) * wallpaper * painter’s tape Tools * paintbrush * foam brush * drop cloth * scissors * ruler & pencil * craft knife (optional) * brayer or small paint roller (optional) 1. First tape off the wheels with painter’s tape, then paint one coat of primer on the frame only. Let dry. 2. Apply two coats of paint (also to the frame only), letting it dry several hours in between coats. 3. Measure, mark, and cut the wallpaper to fit each of the three shelves. 4. Using a foam brush, paint glue in sections on the cart surface. 5. Smooth the wallpaper down with a brayer. I didn’t have a brayer, so I used a dry paint roller, which worked well. When I was shopping for materials, I couldn’t find any toy cows (a cow has to be the one being messed with by the aliens, right?), so I bought a plastic “Noah’s Ark” set that contained a pig (although there were only one of each animal in the set, so I hardly see how that qualifies as a Noah’s Ark set!) And the best part, you could even make these as a “no sew” project! Mine are sewn, but I’m just saying… you don’t have to. A little fabric glue and you’re in! So here’s what you’ll need: * 2 coordinating fabrics (owl body and wings) * coordinating felt (eyes and nose) * batting * owl body template (to ensure that both sides are equal, print the template out and trace it side by side on wax paper) And here are the super easy steps: * Cut out the owl body from one fabric and the wings (just the bottom corners of your owl body) from a coordinating fabric. You’ll need: * an XL t-shirt (or larger) * rotary cutter, mat, and ruler * fiber fill or some sort of stuffing Step 1: lay t-shirt flat on cutting mat. Cut hem off bottom of t-shirt and straighten sides out (if needed). Step 2: cut a 14×14 square through both layers of the t-shirt. These squares form the front and back of the pillow. Step 3: trim off sleeves and use remaining t-shirt fabric to cut strips about 1 1/4 inch wide by 21 (or so) inches long. Step 4: lay out strips on pillow top to determine how many ruffles you want. I wanted 10 for mine. Step 5: set your machine to a really long stitch (called a basting stitch). Sew down the center of each strip, leaving a tail of thread, and making sure to NOT reverse stitch on either end. Looking at this $2000 bundle of logs, nailed together in a circle, I turned to Mike and said, “We could do that, right?” This was about a year ago, so I don’t think he ever said yes to that question, but he explored the possibility with me anyway. In the NYC flower market, birch logs and sticks are generally sold in small two foot-long bundles but to get the thickness we wanted and an even height, we’d have to go the next size up—ten foot-plus. We bought eight branch-less trees, strapped them to the roof of the Volvo and headed to Home Depot. There we purchased the longest nails and screws available with hopes they’d turn kindling into a table. I had seen a blog post somewhere (it’s really too bad I don’t remember which blog I saw it on) about how Baskin Robbins serves ice cream in chocolate molded into cupcake cups. My mouth started salivating, I’m really on a chocolate kick right now. However, as much as I like chocolate, though, I really, REALLY hate eating chocolate chunks cold. THEN, my head started thinking about how easy it would be to use that idea for cupcakes.
