Kanye West's third in a whimsical trilogy of "scholarly" albums, Graduation wears its predecessors' badges of success on its sleeve. Matriculation has its rewards, apparently, and it's time to take stock. Lyrically, there's plenty of self-congratulation to attend to, but the real fun comes in the collabs, and West chooses co-conspirators like a kid in a candy store--John Legend ("Good Life"), Coldplay's Chris Martin ("Homecoming"), Mos Def and the Section Quartet (both adorable choices for the foreboding "Drunk and Hot Girls")--and plucks samples with A-list braggadocio: Elton John, Steely Dan, Daft Punk, Can, Michael Jackson, Public Enemy. Nothing here quite captures the superlative symbiosis of West's past best beats (think "Gold Digger"), but the central motif remains: No one ever accused Kanye West of being too cool for school, and Graduation still knows how to party. A couple of songs that have the more accessible "Walk Away" sound to capture the MTV community (that's not a bad thing). A pleasant surprise for me was "Citizen CIA" which could have come from a Dead Kennedys session. As with their more recent stuff, there are some slow numbers that have something to say, even if you wouldn't include it on a party playlist. (Good for when you're crying in your beer at 2AM) Like ac/dc, one could accuse these guys of making the same album over and over. Yeah, so, what's your point? A lot of people seemed to lose respect for the Black Eyed Peas when Stacy Ferguson joined the fold on their breakthrough album Elephunk (although I personally thought BEP was pretty okay BEFORE that point). But after a while, Fergie became one of the most visible members of the group, even helping them land a Grammy with "My Humps" (but like another reviewer said, I think that song is pretty stupid too). So it probably comes as no surprise that she came out with a solo album, The Dutchess. Fergie's style on this album can be compared to Missy Elliott's in that there's a mixture of singing and rapping. Now, Fergie isn't exactly the dopest MC in the world, but she does help deliver some standouts when she raps, particularly the singles "London Bridge" and "Fergalicious" (although on the latter, somebody should tell will.i.am that "tasty" isn't spelled T-A-S-T-E-Y). How do you follow an album like "So Jealous," an album that not only helped solidify Tegan and Sara's place as one of the decade's most notable indie pop/rock acts, but also helped define their career? How do you follow the sheer, raw enjoyment that was found over every second of such a fantastic record? For the Quin sisters, the answer is "The Con," their newest and, in my opinion, best album. On "The Con," Tegan and Sara show that they've matured a lot since their last outing, not only musically, but lyrically as well. Whereas "So Jealous" was largely a fast-paced rock album, this one is much more balanced. There are clearly songs that sound like classic Tegan and Sara, but at the same time there are also some beautifully composed and executed songs. Almost every track on the album features multiple layers of guitars and synthesizers. Let it be known: "Pretty in Black" is not the same Raveonettes you know and love. Sure we have the creepy vocals from Sune Rose Wagner, and the rough retro sound. But after two increasingly catchy albums' worth of music, the Raveonettes have gotten a lot poppier. The trend started in "Chain Gang of Love" peaks here, in a controversial new sound that retains some of the gloomy grandeur, but loses the ragged lo-fi sound. Acoustics and echoes start it off on a surprisingly soft note, considering that this was the band who turned "tornado rock" into an art form. And Sharin Foo takes lead vocals an ethereal ballad, before shifting back into garage-rock form with "Love in a Trashcan," which sounds like the Velvet Underground's catchier moments. Thus the stakes are pretty high for the band and the new album delivers. "Sleeping Lessons" is strong opening track that is sweeping number that floats between airy keyboards and acoustic guitars before sliding into a slamming electrified end. "Phantom Limb" is the song that closely mirrors their previous work, which isn't a bad thing. "Australia" has an 80's R.E.M. vibe with its jangling guitar riff. "Sea Legs" and "Red Rabbits" depart from the band's usual sound with a pumping bassline prominent on the former and a caribbean sounding beat on the latter. What is has working for it is Amy Winehouse, stomps all over her material in a smokey Billie Holiday tinge of voice that was kissed by Ronnie Spector. She has the sort of voice that goes beyond that utterly dumb label of "Blue Eyed Soul." A heavily teased bouffant wigged, Jewish girl from overseas with a severe dependence on self-medicating herself and being utterly honest about it in interviews has crafted a work that is draw droppingly good. From the breaking, clapping hand claps of "Rehab," The stunning wall to wall sound of "Me and Mr. Jones," to the perfect Shangri Las-esque "Tears Dry on Their Own," Winehouse has crafed a disc with not a single fault.
