It is a shameful symbol of the status of true freedom in the United States of America that the Statue of Liberty remains closed on the pretext that terrorists could attack it at any time. Under the so-called War on Terror, liberty has become a countercultural concept. From the painful embrace of torture to ubiquitous electronic spying networks set up by the government, from Free Speech Zones set up to restrict political demonstrations to the revocation of habeas corpus, the liberty, equality and justice established by the Constitution are under vicious attack.
