One of the biggest perennials for the hardy garden is P. japonicus 'Variegatus' (also called P. japonicus giganteus 'Nishiki-buki'). This plant produces great rounded leaves to 4ft across, each splashed and streaked with yellow. Flowers appear early in spring before the leaves. This small Asian genus provides one of the most distinctive and attractive foliage plants for partial shade. Our hybrid Bergenia 'Cabernet' produces broad, glossy, heart-shaped leaves above which it sports large clusters of deep pink flowers beginning in April and continuing into May. Plants are extremely hardy and long-lived when they get gritty, well-drained soil and protection from afternoon sun, and a sizeable cluster offers a handsome pool of color and texture through the season. The absolute best value is secured in situations where the foliage remains evergreen through the winter. In our experience, that means Zones 6 and warmer, or spots in colder areas where a microclimate approximates these conditions. This highly cultivated form of the familiar Black Elder is primarily a foliage plant whose deeply cut, jet-black leaves present themselves in graceful, fern-like fans. Plants are broadly arching and reach 6-8 ft in height, perhaps 5 wide, and make superb specimens for many situations. Large pink flowers in June lead, in due course, to black berries (we've not eaten them, but the birds do). Because plants are dead hardy through all of Zone 5, and into 4, they provide a very welcome alternative to Japanese Maples where exquisite foliage is needed but harsh temperatures prevail. For best shape and foliage, prune hard in early spring and provide even moisture. A remarkably beautiful plant that cleaned up the prizes at the Chelsea Flower Show in 2003. (PP 15,575) See less
