Well, kiss goodbye to the days of sucking spilt tomato ketchup from your knuckles with the Trongs. Trongs look a lot like birds feet. Three pointy bits of plastic with ‘teeth’ like ends which somehow make it ok to eat with your fingers. Mothers all over the world will hate them for teaching little Oregano to eschew the knife and fork and dig in with his hands. But oh well. They do look surprisingly fun… Actually, since they don’t appear to cover more than the first bend of your fingers I can imagine they’d be much cleaner than just picking the food up anyway. Portable Toaster might burn your hand along with that bread At first glance, you might think this is some kind of cake knife, but this design concept by Kim Been is actually a handheld toaster. The idea is to run the portable toaster over the bread until it's done to your liking, and if you're wondering how long you've been hand-toasting that bread, an animated graphic indicates how well the bread has been toasted. But couldn't you just see that for yourself? While this is an aesthetically pleasing design, we're thinking it's not well thought-out. First, how much power will be available to put that tasty brown patina on the bread? To get that crusty Maillard Reaction that makes toast so crunchalicious, this utensil would need to be hot as a branding iron. And even if it could get hot enough, wouldn't it be dangerous to hold the bread in your hand as it toasts? Ouch. Back to the old drawing board, Kim. We'll just stick with our Cylon toaster. See less

Karim Rashid designs Slice, ceramic-bladed kitchen cutters for the 22nd century Put fancypants designer Karim Rashid in a room full of knives, and he emerges with these beautiful Slice ceramic cutting devices, making our jaws drop in awe. Our first question was, what the heck are those things? Well, from left to right, there's a precision cutter (kinda like an X-Acto knife), a grater, a vegetable peeler, and a "Y peeler" for potatoes and such. Besides their sci-fi looks, these futuristic implements are packing ceramic blades, which are sharper, harder and stay honed longer than old-timey metal blades. Best of all, these Slice tools are cheap, starting at $7 apiece. Now Karim, get to designing some Slice kitchen knives with green handles to go along with these snazzy gadgets, and our 22nd-century kitchen will be complete. See less
