Louisiana 'pick-up-anywhere' monorail could do away with buses A team of industrial design students at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette have put together a railway that wouldn't need stations to pick up passengers. Instead, system features driverless pods that are mounted to an elevated rail on an arm, which can lower the cabs down to pick up or drop off passengers anywhere along a route. The idea came in part from roller coasters — though you don't have to worry about your pod speeding off through a loop — and a century-old monorail in Wuppertal, Germany, which has only had one major accident since 1903. The team hopes that a system such as their versatile monorail would cut down on the need for buses, which, with personnel, fuel, and maintenance costs, can be too costly to run effectively. See less

I'm happy if I can just scrape the ice off the windows, then I try not to slide around too much on my snow tires. Perhaps with some Snobootz, I'd be more willing to install a grippier solution when it gets really slick. Working kind of like a jacket that you wrap around the tire, the Snobootz have metal cleats that can really dig into ice, and the maker claims they are much easier than chains to install or remove. Popular Science found that they worked great, although the pressure from the car running over the Velcro straps made them tough to unleash. Snobootz are available now for about $200-250 a pair depending on the size. Sounds reasonable to me if they can save you from a soaked and frozen butt. See less

According to Worldchanging, the City of Oslo will convert the sewage to biomethane, then get that methane working as bus fuel. Two sewage plants in Oslo will be adapted to support the infrastructure and the 80 buses will require minor modifications. The Oslo Sewage Bus trial is expected to begin in September, and if successful, all 400 Oslo buses will be converted.Putting aside initial costs, the biomethane is expected to be about €0.40 cheaper per litre, and each bus will save about 40 tons of carbon dioxide every year. The latest green car-as-design-experiment comes in the form of the new T10 from Takeoka Jidosha Kogei Ltd., recently shown off at the International Automotive Electronics Technology Expo in Japan. The egg-like, one-seat electric car has only one door on its right side, and can be charged via100volt or 200volt power sources.
