With thoughts to making the frame wireless, I popped in a WaveLAN Silver PC card and configured it so I could control the 3400 from my iBook via AirPort with Timbuktu, load new photos onto it, etc. It's a lot easier this way than trying to hook up a keyboard and mouse to the ADB port which, at this point in the build, I couldn't be sure was going to be accessible. Machines of this generation generally ran MS Windows 95, which can't cope with new hardware such as wireless PC cards and such, limiting their usefulness. While machines are woefully underpowered for running a new version of MS Windows, they will often run just fine with Linux. See less

While looking around for information to help me with my project, I soon realized that there are quite a number of people who have been building digital picture frames. The laptop I used was a Dell Inspiron 3000. It has a Pentium MMX chip, and a whopping 32mb of RAM. Amazingly, it is able to do the job as long as the photos are under 3MB in size. Anything larger and it seems to hang. Â

Use lots of hot glue: Run Linux on your picture frame, because hey, that’s what real men do: And that’s it! You now have a wicked digital picture frame! I wrote a perl script to do the image changing. It does them randomly until it uses the whole photo set, then it re-randomises and starts again. Loads of fun for all the family!! Both frames were created from old laptops I had lying around the house. I started thinking about making a DPF after I bought a Ceiva for my Grandmother in 2001. I set the power settings to never put the display to sleep (since that's the main purpose of this project) and to spin down the hard drive whenever possible. I think these are in the Energy Saver preferences in control panels under the apple menu.

I started with the IBM Thinkpad 380. I went online and found a repair manual and started hacking into it to see how long the connections for the screen were, and to see if I could get rid of some of the bulk. I found a site that has instructions for making an old 386 laptop into a digital picture frame using a dos boot floppy disk and a small dos slideshow program called lxpic. So I followed the links for the boot disk and the slideshow software and downloaded both of them. I trimmed the dos boot disk since I didn't need all of that stuff and resized some pics in photoshop to be 800 x 600 .jpg files. I slapped them onto the floppy with lxpic, edited the autoexec.bat file to include lxpic /9Y&& so that it would run at 800 x 600 and automatically change pictures after 2 minutes. I like this setup because it is easy, but the floppy is noisy and slow, so I decided to just install dos on this machine and run everything off of the harddrive and copy pics to it via the floppy drive ( it has...
