Much attention has been devoted to methods of reducing costs such as outsourcing and offshoring, but less attention has been focused on the business enablement value of new technology. Service-oriented architecture (SOA) has emerged as the most significant shift in how business applications are designed, developed and implemented in the last 10 years, eclipsing the shift to client-server. This book is an excellent reference for anyone studying the SEI/CMM framework. It is excellent if you are a beginner or an old timer in the world of process improvement. This is by far the best book written by the Watts Humphrey group. I received this book at 4:00pm, cracked it open at 7:30pm and did not put it down till 11:00pm. The style, and approach makes this book enjoyable, YES enjoyable to read. Some critics have been too harsh on the CMM model and try to dismiss it. These same critics then try to explain that CMM is a waste of time,and praise RUP/UML. This is not so. SEI/CMM establishes the framework that gauge success in a software organization. Methodologies such as RUP/UML, and Structured Analysis and Design support the CMM and its Key Process Areas. There is no conflict, only support. Think of the CMM KPA(s) as the "what" and the methodologies as the "how". Kudos to the authors in their continuing efforts to teach the software community about process improvement. Was this... Even more detailed models have recently been created to evaluate specific processes, such as IT Asset Management and other key domains. In conjunction with the development of these maturity models, Aperture has developed a Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM) maturity model to assist organizations in assessing their maturity in DCIM processes. IT organizations must seriously consider all aspects of process maturity, including DCIM maturity, in order to best deliver services to the rest of the enterprise. The IT Service Capability Maturity Model (IT Service CMM®) is a maturity growth model aimed at providers of IT services, such as management of hardware and software, operations, and software maintenance. The structure of the model is equal to that of the Software CMM, the contents of the IT Service CMM, however, are key process areas needed for mature IT service provision. The IT Service CMM is work in progress. We are currently finishing version 1.0 of the model. You are invited to join in the review process. Currently, the IT Service CMM is in use in several medium-sized and large organizations. See the list of assessments for some of the organizations that are applying the IT Service CMM to improve their IT service processes and organization(s). The Capability Maturity Model provides software organizations guidance on how to gain control of their processes to develop and maintain software and how to evolve toward a culture of software engineering and management excellence. The Software Engineering Institute's (SEI) Capability Maturity Model (CMM) defines five levels of Software Process Maturity as shown in Table 1. According to SEI data, more than 70 percent of all software organizations are at Level 1. This information may be misleading. In actuality, many organizations may lie well below the merely chaotic. All software organizations are assumed to be at Level 1 simply because no lower levels exist within the CMM framework. This article defines and describes lower maturity levels and their associated Kounter Productive Attitudes (KPAs) (in CMM literature KPA stands for Key Process Area).
