Lior got the idea for the design when trying to find a convenient way to keep stacks of books off his dorm room floor. The result kept his textbooks visible and within arm’s reach, while also providing a way to organize books by topic or author. Capturing a pattern that could represent a burst of light or sound (or Grace’s whistle), the Rug’s depth and texture is highlighted by Adams’ use of color and thick pile. Hand tufted out of 100% New Zealand wool, the Grace Rug’s 1" pile is soft and inviting. The edging is resolved without having to use a band, and the smooth cotton backing is attached using a natural rubber latex adhesive. This backing will not scratch floors, and a DWR Rug Pad is recommended to keep the Rug from sliding. The designer was true to his words when he created the Girard Coffee Table (1948) for Knoll®. The art of this coffee table is its book-matched walnut veneer tabletop, organic shape and smooth 45-degree beveled edge. The “living” part is in how the table can be positioned with either the straight or asymmetrical side toward the seating area, providing a large surface area in a relatively narrow footprint. Girard’s work has been the subject of many museum exhibitions, including a 2004 retrospective at the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum. Nani Marquina is normally associated with arresting colors and whimsical designs, but with her Asia Rug (2006) she focused entirely on creating an incredibly plush and texturally rich floor covering. The hand-knotted design showcases the artistry of creating a bi-level pattern through a completely manual system. The wool is securely attached to the base with a knot, and it is through the form and type of knot that the different levels are created. The knot count of the Asia Rug is a very dense 6,300 knots/ sq. ft. Marquina had a career as a textile designer before switching to rug design and creating her own company in 1986. In 2005, she was honored with the National Design Award from the Barcelona Center of Design. Together with the nonprofit Care & Fair, Nani Marquina is fighting against illegal child labor in the manufacturing of carpets. See less
