After reading the manual thoroughly, I wound the bobbin, inserted it and sewed my first seam ever! I have since used this machine to sew several garments and do alterations and it just powers through them! I made a dress last year with a Bemberg rayon lining and the M-U sewed it like a champ, without needle-snagging or pulling at all. I haven't tried sewing knits yet (and I probably won't as I prefer crisp wovens anyway), but from what I've heard, it works fine on these as well. I paid $60 plus shipping on eBay, and then had to buy the correct manual as my seller screwed up and sent me the wrong one! I also ordered more presser feet (including the invisible zip foot) and extra bobbins from Sears over the phone. I haven't had the machine serviced yet, but it's probably time... What Chickey17 does not like about this machine I actually love everything about this... See less

This book is very approachable for the beginning sewer. Her writing style is very casual and she covers topics from choosing a sewing machine to setting up your sewing workspace to applying bias binding. She talks about the threads tangling in your machine and what to do about it, which happens to every sewer and can really frustrate a beginner. The projects are good beginning projects- not too complicated, but you can probably find something in the book that you want to make and will actually use. And if your project doesn't turn out perfect, you won't feel like you failed-- the author explains why mistakes are an okay thing. If you are an experienced sewer, you probably won't see any projects that you haven't seen or tried before. However, reading the first part of the book reinforced some habits I need to follow (changing my sewing machine needle often, pressing often) and gave me some technique ideas that I didn't know. There is also a lot of interest in old fashioned sewing machines (such as old Singers) that have a pump pedal which powers them. If they work, this is a fine solution for basic needs.
