Most people will say the Honda CB750 was the first true superbike. But a few will point to the Kawasaki Z1 Series 900 of 1972. The four-cylinder, DOHC ‘Zed’ could hit 120 mph, and if you’ve got one in your garage today, it’ll be worth several times what you paid for it. The bike you’re looking at is not from a period publicity shot, but a machine currently in Australia: it’s one of the last of the series, and the result of a ground-up restoration by photographer Stuart Bowey and a friend in 2008. It’s technically a Z900 because in 1976, towards the end of the Z1’s life, Kawasaki made minor improvements to the bike and changed the name. To be even more precise, this bike is an ‘A4’ from the first batch of Z900s off the production line. It came in dark green or brown, and the styling still looks sharp today. As with most high-powered 70s motorcycles, the Z900’s handling is commonly regarded as a bit suspect, albeit improved over the Z1—but owners report that the failings are overrated.... See less

Quickly I shot over to the far left lane and got clear. The tractor/trailer had not stopped but was proceeding at a much slower pace, I guess looking for an exit. Meguro may well be the first "manufacturer" of motorcycles in Japan, tracing its roots back as far as 1909, to a small ironworks in Shibuya-cho, Tokyo prefecture. During this period in the early 1900s, there was a burgeoning cottage-industry of small-scale garage builders within Japan, cobbling together motorcycles from odd bits and pieces. By 1922, the early incarnations of the "Meguro" brand were now produced by a man named Osamu Murata, who founded the Murata Iron Works of Tokyo Prefecture, Japan. Murata's first motorcycles were either single-cylinder models based on the British singles of the era, or knock-offs of the Harley-Davidson Model J big twins. At some point around 1928, Murata Works adopted the name "Meguro Works," which was possibly chosen in honor of the Meguro racetrack located in the Tokyo ward of Meguro from 1907 to 1933. The Tina was introduced to take advantage of the Scooter craze of the sixties, but was this a mistake. Triumph renown was for it's motorcycles and it should have stayed with them, spending their development budget on beating the oncoming deluge from Japan instead of this lame duck. The scooter design was common enough based around a steel pressed spine, and even the engine and rear wheel transmission unit was a fairly common layout as used on the Lambretta's of the day. The drive train was innovative and instead of a gear box, a infinitely variable belt system was used, based around a pulley which was built in two halves and was forced together by three large ball bearings rising up a ramp device under the effect of centrifugal force. This worked well, but it was the 2-stroke engine that did not. I spent hours kicking it over as you could not bump start it. The spark plug used to foul up and was a bitch to change or clean. This is a little known fact, but once upon a time, British motorcycle manufacturer Triumph used to make scooters. The first one came of the production lines in 1962. Called the Triumph T10 Tina, it was supposed to jump on the scooter bandwagon. Scooters had become the fad in the UK, and Triumph thought it was a good idea to have one, despite reservations by the then CEO Edward Turner . Though designed by Turner himself, it cost Triumph dearly, since they didn't sell many, and the money should have been spent fighting off the Japanese motorcycles. Later renamed to just T10, they stopped making them in 1970. The Triumph T10 Tina scooter is a 100 cc, 2-stroke engine with a top speed of 45 mph. It got 100 mpg and had a weight of 143 pounds. Hello and welcome to W650 Cafe Racer. This site is devoted to the dream I’ve had of building a cafe racer and using it to glorify Jesus. I will be trying to document the process of building the cafe racer as well as blogging to update everyone who supports my family and our ministry. So look around and enjoy W650 Cafe Racer. What is a W650? For those who don’t know, the W650 was a motorcycle built by Kawasaki and imported into America between 200 and 2001. It was fashioned after a late 1960’s Triumph Bonneville, clear down to the kick-start and 1” handlebars. Due to the lack of Americans creativity and true indvididualism Kawasaki ceased importing in 2001. The motorcycle was wildly popular in many other motorcycle scenes and remained in production in many other markets until 2006, most notably Japan. See less

Kawasaki has manufactured the W650 since 1999. It is a "retro" model designed to reflect the appearance and sound of 1960's British parallel twin motorcycles such as the Triumph Bonneville. The "W" in its model name makes a historic reference to Kawasaki's W1, W2 and W3 models, manufactured between 1967 and 1975. In the United States and Canada the W650 was imported from 1999 until 2000. With weak US and Canadian sales and the introduction of the competing "retro" Bonneville by Triumph, Kawasaki concentrated sales in in Europe and Japan. Kawasaki gave the W650 a long-stroke engine of 72 mm bore x 80 mm stroke in order to mimic the character of historic British parallel twins. However, in 2006 Kawasaki added a short-stroke W400 model, in Japan. Kawasaki simply combined the same 72 mm bore with a short-throw crankshaft to give a 49 mm stroke and 399 cc displacement. The weekend started with Mother Nature dampening things on Friday’s practice day, but Saturday saw the Bridgstone/WERA National Endurance Teams take a dry grid and run 4 hours of non-stop racing in the dry. Vesrah Suzuki on their GSX-R1000 won the race and with the win clinched their Championship with riders Tray Batey, Corey West and John Jacobi. Team owner Mark Junge has been Endurance racing for nine years and even after all those years a Championship is still special to him. BEI Racing with Billy Ethridge and Robbie Jensen on board the GSX-R Suzuki 1000 finished 2nd and Zyvax Racing with Jeff Kramer, JB Layman, CR Giterre and Shane Narbonne on their Yamaha 600 rounded out the podium. TVR 131 took the Heavyweight Superstock win on their R-1 Yamaha with Jamie James riding for the injured Zac Chapman along with Reuben Frankenfield and Jimmy Vanderhaar sharing the riding duties for the weekend. TOURERS Large-scale luxury on a lite-beer budget 32. HONDA ST1100, 1991-2002 Going Rate: $5600 for 1994 models. (add $965 for an ABS-TCS-equipped bike) Honda's ST1100 is the bike of choice for resolute Iron Butt Association members. Long-distance disciples revere its land-yacht luxury, cargo capacity and relatively athletic chassis. Powered by a transverse-mounted, 1084cc V-four that pumps out 90-ish horsepower, the ST1100 is a paragon of reliability and durability. After an 11-year production run, Honda replaced it with the 2003 ST1300. The 1100 changed little during its tenure, so mid-'90s versions are quite similar to '02, but thousands of dollars cheaper. The only problem is finding a clean, used 1100 with an odometer that doesn't show six-figure mileage. Sore Spots: Deficient alternator for heavily accessorized Iron Butts. PapaJames calls this the 'Pegaso'. He writes - 'I have completed the mods and have put about 1,000 miles on this mild one-off custom. The forks are longer than stock and set the bike up straight. Straight line stability is improved also. It needs the fork stops trimmed a bit. The headers are single wall light weight mild steel tubing with ceramic coating inside and out. The reverse cones are removable and packed with fibreglass. Sounds deep and crisp. The DP tires tend to walk a bit over 90mph due to the aggressive tread design. Top speed is 110 in 4th. and 105 in 5th. It delivers 50+mpg @65mph and 3,500rpm. Tank holds 4usg and goes 150 miles on a fillup. Some minor vibration between 3,000 and 3,500 rpm, but is really sweet at 75mph. It weighs in less than a stock bike at 440# wet. See less
