Jonas is looking to do a Mac OS X Smart Card project - "Because I fear I will never have time to do this project I was wondering if any budding smart card tinkerers would be able to hack together a low end "smart card" authentication token for Mac OS X? As some know 10.4 has built in support for the US Government Smart Card Interface Standard authentication thanks to some government agencies using it. I also saw Cryptocard bragging that Apple included their driver by default (sorry I don't know which one it is). Interestingly they sell both smart card AND USB devices which it says are compatible with Mac OS X.." Really what I would love to see is the ability to use one of these "smart cards" which I've recently seen popping up in laundry mats because obviously they're cheap and plentiful which at least takes that component out of the equation (disclaimer: I don't know anything about what underlying technology they use so I don't know if it is feasible with these cards necessarily). Thursby Software Systems today released ADmitMac for CAC Beta (AFC), integrating U.S. Department of Defense Common Access Cards (CAC) into Mac OS X. AFC offers a single sign-on environment verifying the CAC against a centralized network authority, obtains authorized Kerberos certificates, and makes those certificates available to "Kerberized" applications. The software also locks the computer upon removal of a CAC card, and protects the system from unauthorized attempts to wake from sleep. AFC changes the normal login screen and challenges the user to enter their CAC card PIN authorization when a CAC is inserted into the Mac. Upon verification of the user's PIN, AFC obtains the proper network credentials from the Kerberos Key Distribution Center. Since my original post, I've flashed firmware version 5.18 onto my CAC reader and moved the CCID Class Driver back to where it was originally. I've also followed all the instructions according to the Naval Postdoctorate document on CAC on a Mac. With my updated reader, my laptop recognizes my reader and properly requests and knows when I've properly inputed by PIN, but it states that my certificates with my name on it are still "not valid" when I look at them via Keychain Access. Perform these steps on a Windows XP system with local Administrator authority. * Plug the “unflashed” ActivCard USB reader into a USB port. * Launch the ActivCard Gold Utilities (in the system tray) and insert a CAC card to make sure the reader functions correctly. * Go to Start | Settings | Control Panel | Administrative Tools | Services. * Stop the following services: * ActivCard Gold AutoRegister * ActivCard Gold Service * Smart Card Service * Extract the SCR33xx_inst_English_V8.11.zip contents into a folder.
