I think these turned out just beautiful, which is a good thing, but I also think they're a little too beautiful for what I was going for. In one of the many fancy pants boutiques around the area, I came across a big bowlful of silk flowers. Normally I don't like silk flowers at all, but these just looked stunning. I could tell the edges had been melted which caused the petals to curl in and gave the whole thing a more haphazard look, which almost came across organic. So I ran home to raid the stash and see what I could come up with to fill the many many empty bowls I have scattered throughout the house. What You'll Need Tulle ( 6" wide) (One 25 yard spool will yield 9 poofs) Fabric coated wire Stick-on rhinestones ( 10 - 12 per poof) A scrap of heavy card stock Fishing line Scissors Wire cutters Directions 1. Cut a length of tulle, two and a half yards long. 2. Cut a scrap of card stock 4 inches by 6 inches. 3. Wrap your length of tulle around the width of the card until you reach the end. (see fig 1) 4. Carefully slide the tulle off the card. (see fig 2) 5. Cut a 2" piece of coated wire and twist it around the center of the tulle bundle to create a bow shape. (see fig 3) 6. Begin by washing and removing the labels from your tin cans. Be careful not to cut yourself on the edge of the cans. 2. Take a piece of moss, lay it on the outside of the can and wrap your string around the moss and can several times until it's secure. (see figure 1) 3. Add another piece of moss and wrap the string around again. Repeat until the can is covered. 4. Take your scissors and trim the moss from the top and bottom of can to make the edges neat. You will need: Newspaper Scissors Sicky tape and PVA glue Fabric scraps, Rattan cane hoops (from craft shops) Small styrofoam balls - optional Embroidery thread and a long needle Swings: Cut brightly coloured and patterned fabric into strips measuring about 1 inch wide and roughly 12 inches long. Wind a strip around a hoop, leaving roughly 3 inches loose at each end. Take a second fabric strip and tie it to the end of the first strip with a double knot. Leave the ends sticking out. I tried using a knitting needle to get it to curl better, but no luck. I ended up having to fold and crease and then relaxing that as I rolled. So mine look more like roses, I guess. What you'll need: - 2 photographs; - sheets of paper (they can be blank or try a mixed stack of recycled papers); - 1 thin strip of paper (choose a color to match your photos); - 2 wooden pegs (or big binder clips); - two wooden boards (or old books); - sheet of wax paper; - brush; - white glue (craft glue or PVA bookbinding glue) 1. Trim your 2 photographs and the sheets of paper so they are all the same size. 2. Stack together the sheets of paper, put one photograph on top and one on the bottom of the stack with the pictures facing outwards. Try to line up the papers and covers along the left edge as neatly as possible (this is the spine). Hold everything in place with the wooden pegs. 3. The tools you use is perhaps one of the most important factors in the success of your stamps. :) 1. speedball linoleum carving set Finding this carving set may be difficult, but it's worth the search! It gives you control and accuracy! :) 2. x-acto knife I use my x-acto knife to cut the stamp carving material to the size that I want. Pretty nifty, versatile tool. 3. versaFine, versaMagic, and brilliance inkpads I LOVE different inks, but my favorites are the above. *sigh* These guys are super expensive, but they last a while, and they give your stamped image more than you could ever imagine! Switchplates were the March 2008 theme for my Out of the Box creativity challenge. I took some in progress photos but not a full-blown tutorial. I even forgot to take a stylized photo of the one I traded that night, very unlike me! Fortunately making these are extremely addictive so I had plenty more for that purpose. Guess which is Leil’s and which is Caitlin’s? Feel free to ask questions about missing steps. I used a standard white plastic switchplate for the base, Yes! paste and Mod Podge Gloss Lustre. I started off trying to use Mod Podge as both the adhesive to attach the fabric and as the top coat. Everything slipped around so I changed to Yes! paste for attaching the fabric. It provided just the right amount of tack to keep things in place. The other construction element I experimented with was the center hole. I tried cutting a slot in the fabric and bending back the wings to paste them to the backside, a standard technique when using paper or contact paper. I wasn’t satisfied... See less

You can cover your own buttons without buying the cover buttons kit. Here is how: You first will need... 1. Scrap of fabric (enough to cover the button that you will be using) 2. A button with a shank. (Button with a loop on the back. No holes) 3. Scisors 4. Embroidery thread (just 3 ends) 5. Fine needle 6. Ruler 7. Ball point pen With the ruler measure the distance between the shank and the edge of the button. With the pen and from the edge of the button, mark onto the fabric the distance that you obtained from measuring the inside of the button. With the button on the fabric and upside down trace around the button the circumference of the piece of fabric needed to cover the button. Put the button aside and cut the circle. With the needle and the embroidery thread, stitch a running stitch along the edge of the fabric circle. Make sure to leave a tail of thread long enough to make a couple knots. A few people have emailed asking how to make the little fabric-covered tacks I posted previously. See step-by-step photos below, going from left to right. Start with a pack of "Wedding Gown Size" (size 20, 1/2") metal buttons to cover (available at fabric stores for about $1.50). Pull the loops off all the button backing pieces with a pliers or wire cutter. Cut your fabric scraps into circles slightly larger than a quarter, or use the circle template printed on the back of your button package. (Since the edges get tucked in under the metal backing, you don't have to be a careful cutter.) Following the package directions, use the "pusher" tool that came in the pack to cover your buttons with fabric. This step is easy and the most fun! Then use a generous amount of hot glue to attach a tack to the back of your button. A standard tack should fit perfectly. Your cork board will thank you. POST SCRIPT: You can buy buttons to cover that have flat backs so you don't have to yank off the wire... See less

I bought mine online at DIY upholstery. You might have an upholstery supply store in town (but honestly, that's not very likely). I liked this website because they had pictures and descriptions of all the items. If you do a search for upholstery supplies, you'll find a number of sites. Be warned however. There are a million and one upholstery tools and supplies and it is easy to get overwhelmed as to what you need for what purpose when. You can make them whatever size you like, but I would suggest starting with a small pom pom so it doesn't take forever. * Cardboard * Compass, or two circular items you can trace around. * Wool * ScissorsMethod Step one in making pom poms is to create two donut shaped pieces of cardboard. Using your compass or larger of your two circular items, trace out two circles on your cardboard. I would suggest about 5cm (2 inches) diameter. Next put a smaller circle, say 2cm (a little under 1 inche) in the middle of your larger circles. Now cut out the two larger circles, then cut out the inner circles. You will now have two donut shaped rings, 5cm outside diameter with a 2cm diameter hole. Place the rings together. The idea now is to wind the wool around the rings.
