You can also use some fancy stitches here if your machine has them. If you want to embroider anything on the pockets, now is the time to do so. Zippered Pocket Tutorial One of the biggest phobias of sewing is the dreaded zipper. The truth is, with the proper tools, putting in a zipper is no problem. The most important tool is a zipper foot. Some sort of adhesive is very helpful as well. I like to use fusible tape, but an ordinary glue stick will do the job. Materials: 9 x 14 inch rectangle of fabric 7 inch zipper (if you have a longer zipper, it can easily be cut down) Water soluble marker or tailors chalk Fusible tape or glue stick Zipper Foot To follow this tutorial, first cut all your purse pieces and interface as desired. A few things before we begin: ~ A wristlet is a small zippered pouch with a ribbon bracelet so it can be worn around the wrist. ~ My sewing is very much like Rachael Ray’s cooking — not at all precise, but a lot of fun. ~ If I can sew a zipper, a monkey can sew a zipper. What you’ll need: Scraps of fabric to create: 2 exterior squares, 8″ x 8″ 2 interior rectangles, 8″ x 7″ 1 7″ zipper 1 label — if it’s your fancy 1. Thanks for those of you who asked for a tutorial on the fabric basket project I updated yesterday! This is gonna be my second tutorial on my this blog. If anything isn't clear, feel free to leave me a comment and ask me for help. Remember that all seam allowances are 1/4" throughout the process. First of all, cut out 2" squares from 3 different kinds of fabrics: 8 squares from each. Sew together two squares, making sure those two are different fabrics. I made equal amounts for each set like in the picture: 4 for each set. Press seams in one direction in the way that it isn't on top of each other. Now Sew together pieces to create 2 6x2 patchwork layer. When 2 layers are completed, press seam open like this. It should look like this when you flip them over.When the same fabrics are not next to each other like this, it might look a little interesting. Sew the patchwork layers to a 6"x9 1/4" piece of linen fabric. Place a fleece batting underneath it. Fleece batting is stable and great... See less

This snow that we are having at the moment is really pretty. I woke up a couple of mornings ago to see that the garden was covered in inches of it. I love the clear crisp air, and the quietness of snow. I took Beans the dog out for his morning stroll but he wasn't too keen. Perhaps it's because he doesn't have his own hat, scarf, and mittens to wear! Beans stayed firmly in the house whilst I went outside to the garden to take this lovely pic. Hands up anyone who has a growing fabric stash that they feel a bit guilty about and that: nothing seems match; the pieces seem too small to make anything special/useful; you are not too hot at patchwork;... Well, that'll be me on all counts then!!! Here is a easy peasy coin purse which will take you less than 45 mins to whip-up. This purse is a great way to use up left over fabric stash and turn it into something cute and useful in next to no time (it's an answer to one of my craft prayers anyway!). I have finished the purse that I was working on this week (ohh! and I just love it, but I must be good, it's supposed to an Xmas present). I have used Laundry Day Fabric, and a Modern Silver Frame Med. Making this purse isn't nearly as tricky as you might think. I have also added another feature which allows the bag to be folded up into its own pouch (you will see this further down in the tutorial). The bag is made from one pattern piece. It's just like the plastic shopping bags and in fact the pattern is made from the shopping bag. The following picture shows the bag full (with three 2 litre drinks inside - and, BTW, carried them perfectly without the fear of the bag falling apart like the plastic ones). You start by making your pattern using.....ta da.... you guessed it, a plastic bag. Cut off the fused ends at the bottom and both top handles: Open out the gusset and cut in half on both sides: Discard one piece and fold the remaining piece in half: Place this on the fold of your fabric and pin. The Disappearing 9 Patch block is great. Very easy to make, but looks quite impressive when done! I first discovered it in a book called "Magic Pillows, Hidden Quilts" by Karin Hellaby. I've since seen it on line in various places and using different names. Here's a little tutorial on how to make a scrappy version. Firstly - select and stitch together 9 squares. For maximum contrast try and get 5 darker prints and 4 lighter prints arranged with the darker prints as the X of the 9 patch. Square this up, then cut through the block both vertically and horizontally. (My starting squares were 4", so I squared up to 11", then cut to make each new block 5.5".) Turn blocks to rearrange pattern. This is my finished incuabtor sized quilt which used 3 of the original 9 patch blocks. Easy peasey!! See less

I have been dying to learn how to make a lined, zippered pouch FO-EVER! I've tried and tried with no success until today! I used dyabolica's post (http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=10165.0) to guide me. I'm making this tutorial only because I felt like a little elaboration would benefit those of us who are a little more inept. Here goes: Step 1: Assemble your ingredients. I used 6 1/2" x 10" fabric pieces and an 8" zipper. Iron your fabric to get it flat -- I'm not fantastic about getting all the wrinkles out, as you can see. Step 2: Place the zipper WRONG SIDE UP on one piece of the exterior fabric. The fabric should be RIGHT SIDE UP. Pin in place and stitch along the top part of the zipper using your zipper foot. Step 3: Once the first exterior is securely sewn to the top portion of the zipper, place one of the lining fabric pieces, WRONG SIDE UP, directly on top of the zipper. Line up the edges and stitch in place right along the top. Ultimately you'll be stitching on... See less

A couple of people have asked me if I use a pattern for the little bags I sew. Not usually, but the bags are generally adaptations of one basic design. I thought I'd share that design in case anyone is interested. First, cut out the fabric! You can cut out either one piece where the fold would be the bottom of the bag or two pieces (you'd have to cut out two pieces if the pattern in the fabric goes in one direction; otherwise, the design would be upside down on one side of the bag). I use 1/4" seam allowances, so if you want the finished bag to be 5" wide and 7" tall, your one piece would need to be 5 1/2" wide and 14 1/2" long. The example is one piece, folded: You will want to cut a lining as well. It will be the same size as the exterior. Stitch the sides of the bag, right sides together and using a 1/4" seam. Also stitch the bottom if you cut two pieces instead of one. Next, you will sew in the corners of the bottom of the bag to create a flat bottom. Grab the bottom corner and... See less

I know that there are about a bazillion flower tutorials out there, but I thought I'd share my way of making them. It's really quite simple. Start out with about a 4" square of fabric - this will make one petal cluster for a flower of approximately the same size. You will need about 6-8 of these squares. For this particular flower I used 6 squares, 3 each of 2 different fabrics. Fold in half. Fold in half again, matching short sides. Next, cut out an ice cream cone shape, with the folded corner of your square as the point of your cone. When you open it up it should look something like this: Next, sew a circle around the center, just a simple running stitch. Pull threads together, like a little drawstring, tie the two ends of the thread into a knot, then cut off the strings. It should look something like the photo below. I've learned that the bigger the circle, the more gathered the petal clusters become. Repeat these steps for 6-8 petal clusters. The more petal clusters, the fluffier... See less
