good morning! as sad as i was to leave LA, at least it’s sunny and warm here today in brooklyn. i’m gearing up for sunday’s brooklyn flea (come on down if you’re in the area!) but i’ve got black and white on my mind. when i was in LA i walked past walnut wallpaper and saw a gorgeous black and white pattern on the wall. the shop was closed so i couldn’t go in but it kept that combo on my mind so i was happy to see something vaguely similar at pottery barn of all places. their ‘overlapping leaves‘ wallpaper is $84 a roll and would be perfect for a small space that needs a little visual interest. it’s great to see larger stores starting to carry wallpaper- i can’t wait to see if they start to reissue some vintage patterns and carry those. now that would be cool. click here to check out pottery barn’s overlapping leaves. today’s first diy project belongs to jennifer of fric and frac shop. jennifer entered this fun entryway project in the 2008 diy contest and was kind enough to send in her project instructions. if you live in a home or apartment where you’re allowed to paint this is a great way to add some visual interest to your home. it’s also a great alternative to patterned wallpaper if gluing isn’t your thing. jen used a bright red for high contrast but i think it would look equally lovely in shades of the same color for a softer look. want to try this in your home? click here for jennifer’s full instructions or just click “read more” below. enjoy! ATLA readers Jason and Lori shared the doors they'd transformed in their new house. Lori did them herself using embossed wallpaper and paint. She'd been inspired by door panels she'd seen when she and Jason were house hunting. She shared the how-tos with us. Instructions after the jump. * Begin with embossed paintable wallpaper, applied to the surface (in this case the door panels) with wallpaper glue and allowed to cure (fully dry) for a week. * Using a good quality brush, about 1 1/2" to 2" wide, paint on a thin coat of the first paint color. Lori used “metallic” paint from Behr, available at Home Depot. This will become the paint on the “raised” part of the design. * Allow this first coat to dry for about 4 hours. * Thin second coat (Use latex paint in your choice of colour) with faux glaze so that the resulting mixture loses some of it opacity. * Paint on this second coat of paint. * Immediately and carefully, using a piece of paper (newspaper or “loose leaf” paper work here) and... Our little bathroom has no storage and even less room for installing storage. We keep most of our bathroom supplies in the bedroom closet, but a few necessities get stashed in a basic drawer unit and stuck on top of the back of the toilet. Yeah we know, not the most clever and definitely not so pretty but super practical. We got sick of the dirty, ugly drawer unit (with random messy drops of paint) so we decided to take small steps to beautify... We scooped up a few sheets of craft paper we had stashed away, an exacto blade and matte medium (we used Mod Podge). We took all the drawers out and got to work. We didn't bother to measure, just cut up the paper as we went along, glued it on with the medium and then painted on an even layer of Mod Podge, making sure to cover all of the paper. It took about an hour (we had some issues with the little finger cut-outs) and then another few hours to dry completely. So much nicer...looks a little bit more intentional and a lot less shabby art... See less
