We are looking for Beach Captains to help lead these events. A Beach Captain training will be held at the Save Our Shores office on Wednesday, June 27th at 6pm. Free pizza will be provided. Please contact Aleah for more information. Every year thousands of Independence Day revelers hit beaches across Santa Cruz County to celebrate. Every July 5th hundreds of pounds of trash are left behind. Left on the beach, the trash eventually ends up in the ocean, adding to the massive marine debris issues facing our oceans. We will educate beach goers about the impacts of their trash and distribute garbage and recycling bags. The Star Spangled Beach Cleanup will follow Pollution Prevention Day to collect all trash that is still left behind on July 5th. Last year over 1,000 pounds of trash and 350 pounds of recycling were collected by Surfrider Foundation alone! Volunteers are needed for both day’s events. As the largest land mammal, elephants are genetically designed to move and in the wild are in motion for eighteen hours each day. Constant movement is necessary for their physical well-being, especially for foot, joint, and digestive health. Yet the American Zoo and Aquarium Association (AZA), a zoo industry trade organization, only requires a minimum outdoor enclosure size of 1,800 square feet for one elephant - the equivalent of six parking lot spaces. Lack of space in zoos causes captivity-induced physical and psychological health problems for elephants including debilitating foot and joint problems, arthritis, digestive disorders, and neurotic behaviors resulting from the severe confinement. With the recognition that zoos cannot adequately provide for the complex physical and psychological needs of elephants, eight successful U.S. zoos have closed their elephant exhibits, setting a positive precedent worldwide. During the last eight years, when I haven’t been deep in the bush at our Sanaga-Yong Chimpanzee Rescue Center, or working to make it socially unacceptable to eat chimpanzees and gorillas through our media outreach campaign, I have often provided volunteer veterinary care for primates at Yaounde Zoo and Mefou National Park, projects operated by my friends and collaborators at the Cameroon Wildlife Aid Fund (CWAF). “Going Ape”, the Animal Planet series airing weekly in the United Kingdom from 21st November 2006 at 10pm features some of my work, and that of my colleagues, with baby gorilla Shufai, juvenile chimpanzee Nino, and other apes of CWAF, as well as Muna, Bikol and Tati at our own Sanaga-Yong Chimpanzee Rescue Center.
