so, over the last two days i have probably gotten more emails than i have gotten in the last 6 months combined. i am still in process of responding to all of them, and am about 90% through the pile. a lot of the emails are for commissions that i am really excited about. so my plan now? finish a commission a day, while still doing my client work. so far (as in today) it has worked fine, but i assume i am going to collapse from exhaustion, or my hand is going to be permanently deformed by the end of this. one of the reasons i have requested that most of the commissions be in black and white, is my desire to brush up on my inking skills. i feel that over the last few years my ability to use a brush has declined greatly, and i am hoping that practicing every day with these commissions will help me out a lot. a handful of these commissions (both tattoo and wall art) are simply "draw whatever you want", which while at first seems incredibly daunting, have ended up being a lot of fun. this... Well, its friday. But I still wanna celebrate love thursday! Never too late for love right? Things I loved about this week: ~This amazing poem by Dancing Mermaid that makes you feel like she wrote it just for you and your precious heart. I read it a few hours after posting that last post...and it felt like such a blessing. ~This album by Rose Cousins has been on repeat on my ipod all week. So, why no posts in so long? I suppose it's because I want this blog to have the illusion of a cozy, sunshin-y place, and I am in the midst of the winter doldrums! I am over this cold and rain/snow/ice yuckiness and am just sitting and waiting for green grass and warm sun on my face and a sweet spot under a tree to sit with Clara and read and play. blah! Also, I have been on a diet, so that is certainly not very exciting. No pictures of baked goods, no tales of culinary adventure. And in the midst of all of this poopoo-ness, I have been trying to conjure happiness and Spring and make a deadline for Easter critters I'm designing for licensing. So, who would want to read about a cold, hungry, stressed out mama? That's why no posts. BUT, I am feeling revived and hopeful. I drew this little guy recently when, in a panic, I realized that I hadn't made so much as a doodle in weeks, maybe months. Isn't that terrible? Sometimes it feels like there is never enough time to accomplish what you originally set out to do. You get overwhelmed by the details while forgetting the root of your work. Staying in touch is also something I see as a theme when it comes to blogging. What makes it difficult to stay in touch? Being overwhelmed by some things. Also, the fact that people make it difficult to stay in touch or to even contact them. I have visited many green blogs over the past weeks, many of whom have no way to contact them in order to add them to the green blog site directory or to interview them about their websites and the work that they do. It’s frustrating sometimes. There are ways to have a contact page on your site without getting slammed by spammers, if that is what you are worried about. A few weeks ago, I wrote about the trend toward building entire subdivisions as car-free communities here in Germany; though these neighborhoods eschew cars and roads for bikes and courtyards, they also offer a bit of storage space to house the bikes (either as covered garages or, in the single-family homes, on porches). In larger, more compact cities, though, there often isn’t enough room for residents to keep their bikes inside and the threat of theft is too great to store bikes outside (nearly every person I’ve spoken to in Cologne has had a bike stolen - hence the preference for buying cheap, unexciting, used bikes instead of mountain or racing bikes). To keep people riding, then, cities like Copenhagen offer cycles free of charge to riders (the cost of the bike is supported by advertisements). If I made that a habit, I could make a lot of tiny little differences in my life, in someone else’s life. I have a big wish list of projects for the year – some are frivolous and fun, others are almost necessities (eh-hem, the great closet re-do of 2007 springs to mind). I have to take a moment from our regularly scheduled post on environmental issues to talk for a moment about health care in the United States. As I have alluded to in the past, I work in the health care industry. I was educated in and started out on the capitalist side of the medical field. (I put my time in in school, and now it was finally time to make some money!) I worked in private practice for my first 6 years out of school, and can remember feverishly defending private carrier insurance over universal health care to my wife while raking in the bucks in the NYC area. Over the past few years I’ve worked for a non-profit hospital, treating patients in their homes. A majority of my patients are on Medicare - so I have gained experience in “government run” health care. I was watching an episode of The Barefoot Contessa on the Food Network and was inspired by a piece of pink butcher paper. Yep, butcher paper. There was something about the color, texture and look of the paper that I thought felt authentic and real and I thought of a million ways to use it around the house. So, my hunt for butcher paper began. So, I went online and googled "butcher paper" and found a wholesale website that sells it and ordered a roll. I ordered "ground shipping" for it because it was A: the cheapest and B: the greenest option. Choosing overnight or 2-day shipping may get you your order faster, but it uses much more fuel to fly whatever yo bought to you. Ground shipping is a greener choice because it uses more fuel-efficient trucks. And with all this news of UPS figuring out the most fuel efficient route for their trucks to take (no left turns for example), you know it's a better choice. But anyway... I look hilarious in sunglasses, and they don't really stay on my tiny nose too well...so I decided to go for broke and just get heart-shaped ones. The whole time we were there, I was deeply jealous of Heidi's kids. They were just chilling out under the table on a big quilt...eating pizza and ice cream...and generally being lucky ducks: That is the life. Piece of evidence number 139842 that Heidi is the coolest mom: on Sunday, she started to teach her older son, Mr. K, to embroider! Only we forgot the many monkey families that love to share the view with you… hmmm, so you need at least a few dogs to keep the monkeys out, or at least that is what they tell us… true or not, I think I will settle for a nice condo with a view… otherwise it is great to see many houses and explore the city, what I love about KL is that it is so green (compared to any other city I lived in) and at the same time is a cosmopolitan city, with many retro-like buildings mixed with new developments…hope you enjoy this small KL collage!
