… a sense of humor that was far from normal. In fact, his cartoons, some of which have remained in print nearly two thirds of a century, could be just a little bit unnerving. Charles Samuel Addams (who usually signed his work "Chas. Addams") was born January 7, 1912, in Westfield, NJ (a normal American suburban community). His family moved around a lot during his early years, but settled into a nice, normal neighborhood when he was 8 years old, and stayed there for the rest of his childhood. He grew up reasonably normal, with only one recorded infraction of the law — breaking into an old Victorian house in the neighborhood. That house — which, by the way, provided part of the inspiration for the house that figured prominently in his later cartoons — is still standing. In a room over the garage, there is a chalk drawing on a wall, which is believed to have been put there by the youthful Addams. To many peoples' surprise, Charles Addams' (1912-1988) mother did not give birth to him in a dilapidated house along a deserted highway. Nor did he have a pet alligator that was a scourge to the neighborhood's poodles. In fact, he grew up in the almost generic suburban community of Westfield, New Jersey. He yearningly scribbled pictures of the more exciting realm of knights and their castles. He was known however, to sometimes wander in the local graveyard, and did play in a nearby Victorian house that would one day become the model for the Addams' family home. However, somewhat sadly to fans, the predilection for morbidity apparent in much of his work was not the result of childhood mishaps. After graduating from high school, Addams began studying at Colgate University in 1929. Dissatisfied, he transferred to the University of Pennsylvania after a year, resolutely deciding the life of the academic was not for him. His Addams Family cartoons were the basis for a hit TV series and two successful feature films. Addams was a mild mannered man with a wicked but gentle mind. The following is from the 1954 dj notes on Homebodies: "Charles Addams was born in Westfield, New Jersey, forty-one years ago and attended Colgate University, The University of Pennsylvania, and Grand Central School of Art in New York City. His work, almost in its entirety, has been published in The New Yorker for the last twenty-two years and has resulted in three previous books: Drawn and Quartered, Addams and Evil, and Monster Rally. He works mostly in New York City in what looks like an unsuccessful private eye's office. Practically nothing is accomplished in his house at Westhampton Beach on Long Island. Written by Ron MacCloskey Charles Samuel Addams or "Chill" as his friends called him, was born on January 7, 1912 in Westfield, New Jersey. Records show at the time of his birth the Addams' lived on Summit Avenue. They moved several times before taking up permanent residence in 1920 on Elm Street and stayed there until 1947. He attended public school in Westfield and was fond of visiting the Presbyterian Cemetery on Mountain Ave. When he was a youngster he was caught by the police for breaking into a house on Dudley Avenue. On the second floor of the garage behind the main house there is a chalk drawing of a skeleton which is believed to have been drawn by Charles Addams. That house on Dudley and one on Elm Street is said to be the inspiration for the famous "Addams Family house". Westfield Inspiration for Addams Family House At Westfield High School, Charles became the art editor for the Weather Vane and drew many cartoons.
