Boal is the inventive stage director who owns the area of contemporary theater devoted to political activism, both as a theorist and a practitioner. Brazilian by birth and temperament, he has developed the Forum Theatre, the Legislative Theatre, the Rainbow of Desire, and other explorations of audience activity. In this autobiography, he reveals the origins and development of his vision. He does not offer a chronology of events but a narration of remembered and re-imagined encounters with people, objects, texts, ideas, theaters, places, and audiences and they all have stories. Boal remembers everything in vigorous, amused, physical terms. He is a perfect observer who sees everything as comic/sad/ridiculous/tragic all at the same time, with the notable exception of imprisonment and torture, which for him were formative life experiences.
