Led by singer-songwriter Florence Welch, Florence + The Machine burst into the public domain with their eclectic and refreshing debut album, Lungs. A confident mix of soul, rock and indie, the introduction to this London five-piece is an extraordinarily diverse long-player. 'Dog Days Are Over' is a gentle opening, with soft harp and delicate vocals, that gradually builds to a stompy, raucous crescendo. Cutting suddenly to a solitary, timid-sounding piano, the opening track is, in many ways, the perfect introduction to the talents of Florence And The Machine, and ideal preparation for the fascinating and complex musical journey that follows. A subtle tale of revenge, 'Girl With One Eye' is tinged with dark, cynical lyrics, but makes for a comfortable listen thanks to the big-budget studio production which is prominent throughout the album, whilst the frantic, dominating drums of 'Cosmic Love' are both exciting and unpredictable.
