This is probably Dostoevsky's best novel. It is a murder story set in late 19th century St Petersburg, Russia. I just finished reading the book, and when I put it down I thought that it was one of the finest novels ever written. Many think it is long like Tolstoy's 1400 page "War and Peace," but actually it is a quick read, and I read it in two evenings. The author accomplishes a lot with the novel. It is: - a compelling read, start to finish, - compact for the story, only 500 pages, - it has an excellent set of characters, - contains moral dilemmas, - has role reversals, - features universal themes, - contains excellent but not the world's best prose, - many resonances with the reader, - and it has good drama in spots. Overall, it is a very satisfying read. The Bloomsbury guide has a nice write up on C&P and it suggests related reading.
