That same summer, Rostam Batmanglij interned at the Oxford English Dictionary and managed to obtain the key to the harpsichord room at Columbia University. He studied film scoring downtown and rented an apartment in Morningside Heights. At Columbia, Ezra majored in English and Rostam majored in Music. Subtlety does not exist in Fatboy Slim's world. The no-nonsense king of big beat has a job to do: get the party started right. The relentless musical hook is at the center of Greatest Remixes. Reggae and ska rhythms ("Magic Carpet Ride," "Get Up! Go Insane!"), R&B lines ("The World's Made Up of This and That," "What Is Kahuna?"), and acid-synth ("Roll the Dice") are all just grist for the groove mill. "Dubby Jointy" is the disc's wildest track. Backwards tape whooshes, a screaming guitar lick, and a crazed, creepy vocal part coalesce into an inspired version. The album's closer, a remix of "E.V.A." by Jean Jacques Perrey surprises. Fatboy knows enough not to mess too much with the 30-year-old song. It's been quite a while since a Rancid record (or a Rancid side project record) hasn't dissapointed me. The two Transplants records bored me, the second Lars Frederickson solo record embarassed me and "Indestructible" gave me the sense of deja vu that only having heard "Life Won't Wait" or "...and out come the wolves" could illict. So when I heard that Tim Armstong was releasing a solo record I merely shrugged it off and went on about my day. Then I heard that he was giving it away for free, one song at a time, on his website(like that was gonna happen). So after hearing the first two tracks, the excellent "Wake Up" and "Hold On", my interest grew a little. And while Armstrong decided not to give the whole thing out on his website(again, not really a big surprise), when I saw it in stores recently I decided to give it a shot. "A Poet's Life" will surprise anyone who is expecting a record that sounds like Rancid. While Rancid always had a ska/ reggae vibe to many of their songs they... See less

Gotta love the Bosstones man, this is probably one of their best releases, definately one of the most fun to listen to, best songs are "Sugar Free", "You Gotta Go", and "Jackknife to a Swan". If you're a Bosstones fan, or a ska w/horns fan then this is for you. Not many bands weave the horns through their songs like these guys. Only Mr. Vas Deferens, Less Than Jake, and a select few others do. I'd say buy it if you have the cash. | Awesome LP. The BossToneS are awesome. It's more of a 4 1/2-star record, but it comes on sweet clear green vinyl, so that's an extra star. So this should be getting a 5 1/2-star rating. Think about that! Go see the BossToneS live.
