The student will participate in ongoing research in the Oncology Research Laboratory. Our research is centered in three areas: 1) molecular biology of growth control in melanomas 2) molecular mechanisms of resistance to chemotherapeutic agents and 3) analysis of cell cycle regulated genes. The student will join one of these projects, learn the appropriate procedures and will design and perform experiments. In addition, the student will participate in the regular research conference and present relevant articles from the literature as well as his or her research results. See less

Current concepts in the diagnosis, clinical and pathologic staging, and management of various types of malignant diseases will be stressed. Students will actively participate in the multidisciplinary approach to the cancer patient. Clinical exposure will be available in the many subspecialties related to Oncology, including principles of Surgical Oncology, pathological correlations, radiological techniques for diagnosis and treatment, isotopic procedures, and standard and experimental chemotherapy programs. Programs to meet the psychiatric and social needs of these patients and their families will also be observed. Inpatient and outpatient (including clinic and private practice) follow up will be available. Active participation in various work and teaching rounds and conferences will be encouraged. See less

Students are an important part of the health care team, and they are expected to actively participate in all aspects of care of patients, including order writing, making decisions about testing and management, performing indicated procedures and communication with patients and their families. The student is expected to participate in all house staff activities, including professor rounds, work and attending rounds, grand rounds, mortality conference, ECG and x-ray conference, as well as, daily (noon) core curriculum conferences. Individualized research tutorials can be arranged in the basic or clinical sciences. These tutorials provide an opportunity for students to participate in an ongoing project in one of the research laboratories at the NIH. In these experiences, students become involved in translational research protocols. This "bench to bedside and back" approach enables students to experience the interface between laboratory and clinical research. Applicants for research tutorials, if selected, should plan to spend a minimum of eight weeks at the NIH. Prior to applying, students are advised to review the current research being conducted by accessing the NIH web site at http://www.nih.gov. This will enable candidates for research tutorials to identify a laboratory that is engaged in the research project in which they have an interest. See less
