Students will participate in a faculty-directed research project, studying protocol development, subject recruitment, literature review, data acquisition/entry/analysis, publication, presentation at scientific conferences, and/or other aspects of the process as they pertain to the specific project. Students should be willing to dedicate at least 3 hours per week and have an interest in learning about current topics in radiology. It consists of an introduction to radiology plus 5 lectures, one in each of chest & mediastinum, abdomen, pelvis, head & neck and musculoskeletal. Each of these five lectures is followed with a radiology laboratory in which students have an opportunity to apply and reinforce what they learn. Each lab consist of several cases and a hand-out which takes the student through the case in an interactive way, pointing out the anatomy and findings. See less

This is a four week elective offered to all third and fourth year medical students as an introduction to diagnostic imaging and invasive radiologic procedures. The program offers a survey of general radiology and radiologic subspecialties with a series of didactic sessions given by the faculty. The course is highly structured occupying the day from 9:00 AM until 4:00 PM. The first two hours in the morning are directed to clinical rotations where the student can observe patient examinations, the working interpretive sessions and the interface of radiology with the referral services. At 11:00 AM there is a daily lecture for the students covering the multi-specialties of radiology. The mid day Radiology Teaching Conference, a resident format, is elective for student attendance. The afternoon is structured in learning formats of small group exercises, problem based learning, diagnostic algorithms, and assigned cases for student work-up. See less

The course provides broad experience in an active Nuclear Radiology service. Learning Experience: The student will participate in various diagnostic and therapeutic activities with primary emphasis on static and dynamic scintillation imaging in order to gain awareness of the indications, advantages and limitations of these diagnostic methods and the principles of their interpretation. The student will attend the Nuclear Radiology teaching conference each morning, as well as the regular film-reading sessions in general Nuclear Medicine, PET imaging, and Nuclear Cardiology. The Department of Radiology participates fully in implementing and executing the curriculum of the College of Medicine at SUNY Downstate. We have a presence in all four years of the students' education. In the first year we teach normal radiologic anatomy through a series of lectures and an interactive digital imaging atlas on the students' website. During the second year we demonstrate the radiologic appearances of some common diseases and show radiology's role in diagnosis. We also provide faculty facilitators to run small group sessions in the case-based learning (CBL) format throughout the academic year. Early in the third year, during the Transitional Clerkship, we lead a session delineating the uses of the major imaging modalities in working up some common clinical problems, stressing the strengths and limitations of each modality.
