As a fan of Site-Seeing, I must respond to a few of the reviews asserting that the author should have condensed certain material in the book. For me, the many visual examples and the great, detailed explanations (one reviewer suggested "wordy") are exactly what makes this book so useful. Rather than just skimming over important design concepts, the author actually takes the time to properly explain these important principles and illustrate them with examples. In my opinion, many other web design books use only words, whereas in this book, you can actually see and understand what the author is talking about. Comparing three web browsing studies ending in 1994, 1996, and 2005 revealed a shift in how users initiate web page visits (see Table 1). The most significant changes were the increase in submit and new window events and the decrease in the use of the back button. Link following has remained the most common navigation activity, accounting for 43.5% of page transitions. Direct access through bookmarks, typing in urls, or home page buttons has remained relative steady around 10%. New windows has jumped from less than 1% to over 10% of all page transitions in the past 11 years. Form submission has increased from 4.4% to over 15% of all navigation actions reflecting the increase in web services. 43% of all form submissions involve search submission, followed by online dictionary and travel planners. So I just read the big article about MySpace in today’s New York Times and it got me thinking a lot about growth, monetization, and user experience. People always talk so much about how many pages MySpace serves up and how that represents such dramatic growth. After playing with the thing for a few weeks and writing a hugely ridiculous article on customizing it, one thing has really stuck out to me: there are a tremendous amount of extraneous page views being generated at that place. It’s a factory of unnecessary clicks. Over time, however, more and more people started writing content in addition to reading it. This had an interesting effect—suddenly there was too much information to keep up with! We did not have enough time for everyone who wanted our attention and visiting all sites with relevant content simply wasn’t possible. As personal publishing caught on and went mainstream, it became apparent that the Web 1.0 paradigm had to change. I often get requests for reviews of web 2.0 sites on the OpenGardens blog. I cant review them all purely due to time pressures .. However, movietally is an exception for two reasons. The first being, the site is a textbook case of web 2.0 design as referenced by Richard's article on Web 2.0 for designers. The second being, the founder, 'Hayden', is only fifteen years old and is a crack programmer from what I can see! When I was that age, I was also dreaming of setting up great businesses. The web allows us all to fulfill our dreams, whatever our age and our location. So, it’s my way of encouraging innovation by featuring movietally (and yes I have checked with a guardian!)
