After an eBay auction turned up a chair made by Emeco 50 years ago, the company decided to reinterpret the design. Originally made for Navy hospitals in 1951, the chair needed a few modifications. Emeco invited Adrian van Hooydonk and his team at BMW Group DesignworksUSA to join the project. In the same way that the original Mini Cooper relates the new Mini, everyone was in favor of maintaining the original 1951 Chair's simple utilitarian style and aluminum construction, but the lines and surfaces had to be reconsidered. Slightly reshaped, the new 1951 Chair (2005) has more "attitude" and can now be stacked up to 6 high (10-12 high with a dolly). New materials include durable molded ABS plastic and 80% recycled aluminum. The 1951 Collection was also expanded to include a counter stool and barstool. The 1951 in white is suitable for outdoor use. Emeco's use of post-consumer recycled aluminum makes the collection LEED compliant. Made in U.S.A.
