BMC's so-called Pro Machine started as the legendary and almost myth-like race bike of Team Phonak back in 2005. For 2007 riders for the Kazakh-based Team Astana (led by Alexander Vinoukorov) found themselves perched atop these formidable bikes. BMC unveiled the SLC01 as the official team bike for the most elite of Phonak's 2005 Tour de France squadron. Although we didn't catch glimpses of the bike on our shores until the 2005 Interbike, when we did finally see it we were stunned. Not unlike the prior year's Team Machine, which featured aluminum lug work, the SLC01 Pro Machine incorporates the crosslock skeleton concept to join its tubing. But, the lug-work on the SLC01 is, like everything else on this bike, made of carbon (with the exception of the bottom bracket threading). In 2006 BMC introduced a different carbon tubeset and a revolutionary assembly process engineered in conjunction with Easton Composites. Working intimately with Easton's composite materials division, BMC utilizes CNT technology, or, Carbon Nano-Technology, in the tubesets commissioned for the SLC01. CNT technology addresses a inherent weakness in carbon fiber technology, namely, the resin bonding process. It does this by allowing bonding of resin to carbon fibers at the molecular level giving CNT tubes strength 400 times greater than steel. In addition to its increased strength and durability, the new CNT tubeset also allows for a much lighter construction. According to BMC, the SLC01 is also one of the truest frames in the world: each tube and lug is so precisely engineered by a top-secret molding process that bike alignment is, in BMC's words, "virtually perfect." To put that in perspective, the typical mass-produced frameset has an alignment discrepany of 2 to 3 mm. The truer the frame the better it tracks, and this is especially apparent in high speed descents. If you've ever experienced high-speed "wobble" you know how frightening that can be. By comparison a high-speed descent on an SLC01 will inspire nothing but confidence. The BMC SLC01 is largely regarded as one of the most innovative and unique framesets in the pro peloton. For 2008, the frameset will continue to be available in a matte nude finish or team red. Each SLC01 is handbuilt by Easton according to BMC's strict design and quality specifications.

If I could afford a decent carbon road frame, this is what I would get. Other than that, I would go alumnum. Forget titanium, cause I rather have carbon fiber.
