Many bloggers and website publishers think that if they can just get on to the front page of Digg that all of their traffic dreams will come true. They think that internet success is as simple as finding a way to manipulate Digg, but the truth is that trying to "game" Digg is not the secret to long term success and in addition it is just plain wrong. If you head over to Google and you do some research, you will find that there are tons of people out there with opinions about how to make the most out of Digg. There is even a formula out there that bloggers are supposed to follow if they want to get a post on to the front page of Digg. The formula goes something like this: The + (Number) + Most + (Catchy Adjective Such As "Amazing" Or "Outrageous) + (Your Topic) + (Over The Top Ending Such As "Of All Time" Or "Ever") But the truth is that nobody is going to have long term success as a web publisher by trying to "game" Digg or any other social media website. The following are 5 reasons why this is true..... #1) Social Media Sites Like Digg Do Not Like To Be Manipulated Social media sites like Digg and StumbleUpon are really starting to crack down on people who abuse their services. Those who regularly try to manipulate these sites are starting to get their accounts banned and that can be extremely painful especially if you have put many hours of work into an account. #2) You Can Get A Bad Reputation Power users on sites like Digg are very quick to recognize scammers, and once they recognize you, they are not likely to vote for your stories any time soon. Also, once word gets around, a lot of people will quit coming to your site. Do you want long term success? Do it with integrity. #3) When You Try To Cheat Digg You Cheat All Of The Other Submitters Everyone who submits something to Digg would like to be on the front page. So what makes you so special that you get to cheat and manipulate Digg? The reality is that Digg was created to be a "level playing field" and all of us should get a fair shot. So play fair. #4) You Cheapen Digg When You Manipulate Garbage On To The Front Page Many people come to Digg just to read stories. They want to see quality stuff on the front page. If you push a bunch of your garbage to the top, then you are cheapening the Digg experience for thousands of users. Why would you want to do that? #5) The Truth Is That The Path To Long Term Success Is To Produce Quality Content About Something You Love - Not By Manipulating Social Media Sites Like Digg If you really want the very best chance for your blog or website to be successful, there is one approach that stands out above them all..... Create content about what you love. If you try to write about something that you do not enjoy you will run out of steam quickly. Especially when it gets a bit tough and you get discouraged at the lack of readership in the first few months. The truth is that if you write about something you are passionate about, then building your website will never be a chore. In addition, readers can sense the authenticity that only comes from someone who truly knows and loves the subject matter they are writing about. So if you want to be in this internet thing for the long haul then for your sake please pick a topic that you love. The truth is that there are no legitimate shortcuts to success. But if you will pick a topic that you are passionate about, and you keep going through the tough times, and you are willing to work EXTREMELY hard - then you will have a good chance to be truly successful with your blog or website.
