Have a little one who loves Pirates? The high seas, pirate ships, hideouts, and flags can make your child’s imagination run wild. Here are a few ideas to make your pirate party a “smashing” hit. Pirate Birthday Invitations: You can let the guests know the birthday party theme by sending creative pirate invitations. * Use pirate lingo in your invitation. For instance, “Ahoy Hearties! Ye be invited fer birthday spirits at Cap’n (child’s name) Buccaneer merrymaking. Map yer course on the (date) fer (address). We be a meeting at (time) fer some swashbuckling fun and grub, so come suitably attired. Say “Aye” if ye be attending or send a message to (phone number). Those ye dare…shalt be there… (If not, then walk the plank!)”. Pirate Party Decorations: To make the place look like a real pirate’s hangout, you could * Make a sign on the door “Enter at yer own risk” and hang old treasure maps on the walls. * Hang fishing nets, flags and anchors all around your house or yard (nets can also be used over any kind of tablecloth). For the real look you can stick crabs, lobsters, plastic oyster shells, rubber fish and seahorses in the net. * A treasure chest is a must. To make one take a Styrofoam cooler and paint it brown or black. Use gold ribbon to trim the lid and the base of the chest. Glue some small rectangle shapes of yellow craft foam on to the center of the lid in the front and the other directly below to make the lock. For an authentic look, cut out and glue different colored circles around the base. Fill it with gold chocolate coins, gummy fish, starburst candies, colored beaded necklaces etc. * Make a Pirate ship from a large appliance box. Cut it so that one of the corners is the bow of the ship. Paint it brown with blue waves at the bottom and add the mast and flag. You could put your child’s name on the ship. Pirate Birthday Party Games: There are two things about pirates: they are energetic and love to take lots of booty! This is good to keep in mind when you are picking party games: * A treasure hunt is a sure bet: You can make up practically anything for clues. At the end of the hunt, find an interesting place marked with a large X to hide a treasure chest filled with goodie bags for each child. This ensure the loot will be distributed evenly throughout all the kids. * Like the real pirates: Most of the kids will want to sword fight. So, we have an idea for a safe solution! Have the birthday boy and a guest start the duel. Each child is given a bread stick for a sword and the object of the game is to break your opponent’s bread stick without breaking your own. When you have nothing left but a stump you must surrender and the next pirate steps up. The kid who stays the champ the longest is the winner. (Make sure to tell the kids beforehand that they are only allowed to hit the other’s bread stick. If any other body part gets hit the pirate is disqualified!). * Talk the Walk Pirate Game: On a chart write the pirate word and their meaning. For example, Aye – yes, Cutlass – sword, Ahoy – hello, Deadlights – eyes etc. Say that whoever talks like a pirate the most throughout the party wins a prize! * Canon Ball Pop game: for this game place slips of paper inside white balloons that have skull and crossbones printed on them. On one or a few slips write “Shiver me timbers! Booty fer ye!” and on the rest write “Begad! No booty fer ye!” Kids then pop the balloons and read the slips. * Walk the Plank pirate game: No Pirate birthday party is complete without “Walk the Plank”. There are many innovative ways to play it. The simplest is to draw a plank on a sidewalk with chalk. Blindfold the kids and have them walk inside the lines. Another is to take a kiddie pool and put it underneath a plank. Have inflatable alligators swim in it and that’s your alligator pit. Then see who can “walk the plank” without falling into the “alligator pit”. Pirate Party Food: For the cake you could have a pirate ship, treasure chest or pirate hat. Since Pirates were known for their rough eating habits. Try and include food which can be eaten with the
