This was my first new build in about 5 years so going from a single core Athlon XP 2600 to a quad core is just wow. No complaints and something tells me I probably won't have any. Cons: Runs warm but what can you expect from a 125 watt processor. Still Great Reviewed By: swimmerman272 on 12/18/2008 Tech Level: somewhat high - Ownership: 1 month to 1 year This user purchased this item from Newegg Pros: The price is a huge pro, obviously. Unlike many of the proc's sold by the competition, it comes with its own "respectable" hsf--my hip is oc'd from 2.5 (stock) to 3.1 EASY on the stock HSF. Not to mention, it is dead silent. The only time I hear it is when I hear the video card fan spin up faster in a game. Also unlike many of the Intels (not as true now as when I bought it in May) this chip runs 4 true cores, which, for multi-threaded apps, means an amazing boost in performance. Overall though, I would recommend this chip (or I suppose the new 9950) to just about anyone. Cons: Definitely needs a lot more cache. Just about every Intel Core 2 chip has more cache than this, and I really feel like that has to help. The new i7s (hard to compare something that cost 5x as much) run 8 to 12 MB of L2 cache. That makes a HUGE difference. Also, this uses a lot of power... make sure you have an adequate PSU if you are going to run multiple GPUs as well. Other Thoughts: My boot time is pretty sad... not sure why, I have a good HDD setup and decent RAM... I originally bought this system with a 120mm Zalman cooler, but it was way louder than the stock HSF. Granted, it kept the chip 5-10 degrees cooler, but I rarely tap into the full potential of this chip. Reviewed By: Emerson on 12/17/2008 Tech Level: high - Ownership: 1 month to 1 year Pros: Unlocked multiplier Cons: 65nm, runs hot, poor OC'r, 3rd core prone to failure Other Thoughts: I had this CPU for about 90 days and one core at a time failed before the whole thing died. Core 3 always had issues from day one. The last week of its like core 4 started having issues, then the two would fail right away using prime 95. Couldnt get it to OC past 3.2 (by simply changing multiplier to 16 from stock 12.5) and uping voltage to 1.48 This thing was power hungry. There are plenty of other CPUs for a lower price tag that will last longer, be more reliable, run cooler, and use half the power. AMD really let me down on this chip. Did you find this review helpful? Not a quad core...
