BACKGROUND AND MATERIAL INFORMATION ABOUT SWEDART JEWELRY: Your friends will probably be impressed when you tell them that an artisan from a 10,000 year old culture in northern Europe actually made your stunning necklace. Sweden, Norway, and Finland have an indigenous population called the Sami People. The Sami lived on the land before the rest of the Scandinavians arrived. There are still 3,000 Sami (formerly called Lapps or Laplanders) who live near or above the Arctic Circle in Swedish Lapland who own herds with sometimes thousands of domesticated reindeer (caribou) and have reindeer husbandry as their livelihood. Sami artisans have made beautiful crafts of leather with details of antlers and embroidered with coiled pewter and copper wire for hundreds of years. I'm very proud to be able to bring unique craft items originated in the Sami culture to you. During years of visits to Lapland, I have formed personal relationships with every artisan I represent. The Lapland jewelry has been handmade of vegetable tanned top grade garment quality reindeer leather and high quality spun pewter wire (nickel free alloy with 4% silver) for SwedArt of Boston, MA, by the finest artisans available. Some jewelry is made of European calfskin because a certain fashion color was not available in reindeer hide. The wire is spun around strong synthetic sinew thread on a machine operated by one person. The braid is sewn onto the leather from several directions for durability. The button is made of shed reindeer antler and it has been reinforced with a glued-on piece of leather on the back (invisible because it is inside the band), the leather loop has been reinforced with synthetic sinew, and the leather is hand sewn with strong synthetic sinew thread. The ends of the thread have been burned instead of finished with tied knots for extra comfort and durability. See less »
