See more » Those who complain about the increasing number of "carebear" concessions in modern MMOs might just find respite in Codemasters' upcoming ArchLord. A Korean game being translated and refitted for Western audiences, many of the elements on which it builds its foundation are anathema to the casual-friendly, "take-it-at-your-own-pace" philosophies that have emerged in the wake of World of Warcraft. But for the subset of players that scoff at how the genre's developed -- and want something of a harder edge than, say, Vanguard -- something like ArchLord may be just what the doctor ordered. The game's title refers to the pinnacle of player achievement on offer -- the status of ArchLord. By surmounting a series of trials designed to test the mettle of the most dedicated guilds, a single player can don the mantle of the ArchLord, and wield incredible amounts of in-game power. As you would imagine, the process will be suitably involved, and incredibly competitive, and will require massive efforts in both PvE and PvP. In game terms, this will involve laying siege to NPC castles and battling the powerful creatures that guard them. We've been assured that it wouldn't be easy, and judging by the perks -- which include a retinue of summonable guards, a flying dragon for a mount, and control of the in-game weather system -- it darn well shouldn't be. Alas, absolute power doesn't last forever; players will retain ArchLord status for one month, upon which other guilds who have completed the trial can challenge the incumbent demigod for the throne. Before players can even begin to think about ascending in this manner, however, they will have 100 levels to progress through. On the leveling front, ArchLord's early game doesn't seem to deviate too much from what you'd expect from an MMO coming out in 2006. Each race's starting location is replete with quest givers, and you can bang out your early levels with relative ease. Quest givers are clearly marked on the mini-map, and in many cases, quest objects are highlighted as well. Combat seems relatively fast-paced, and the animations are hefty and satisfying -- there's very much an Asian flavor to this aspect of the game's aesthetic. Much as in games like Diablo, expect to consume mass quantities of potions when you're in the thick of battles. There are no healing classes in ArchLord, so your survivability is directly tied in to the number of potions in your inventory. Smartly, they're mapped to keys 1 and 2 by default, and you can also set it so that your character will automatically consume them when injured. ArchLord will have a selection of eight classes, divided up into the game world of Chantra's three races: Humans, Orcs and Moon Elves. Humans will be able to choose from Knights, Archers and Mages; Orcs from Berserkers, Hunters and Sorcerers; and Moon Elves from Rangers and Elementalists. They're all fairly self-explanatory, and apart from the Moon Elves (which have no melee class), they all fall into the melee/ranged/caster scheme. It bears note that genders are hard-coded into the race/class combinations; there are no female Human Knights, no male Orc Hunters, and no male Moon Elves at all (apart from the NPCs you see in town).
