Welcome to Betta MVP (most valuable pet)! I've started this site to help other betta owners or future owners care for their pets the right way. There are many myths out there about bettas like, "Bettas can live in tiny cups because they live in tiny bodies of water in nature." This is not true. Bettas live in rice paddies which are shallow but are actually quite large. Although they can survive in small puddles temporarily, they are great jumpers and always looking for larger bodies of water. They live in these small puddles out of necessity, not because they like it! I'm against the betta hex and peace lily vase setups. A betta hex is too small for your betta to ever live a happy life in. Bettas need room to swim and if you have a large betta, these hexes are so small that he has trouble even turning around! The little plastic plants that come with these hexes snag fins easily and tear them too. If you insist on keeping your betta in this tiny little hex, you need to change his water every day or he will get sick from ammonia or bacteria from the filth that builds up. The peace lily vase is just a really bad idea. The advertising for these setups is that the betta will eat the roots of the plant and therefore does not need to be fed....WRONG! Bettas are carnivores, their natural diet is mosquito larvae and other bugs, they will not get proper nutrition from eating plant roots. Bettas need air at the surface of the water at all times, they have a labyrinth organ which allows them to breath air from the surface. If the surface is covered and they cannot get air, they will die. The roots of the peace lily will also rot and pollute the water causing all kinds of problems for your betta. If you have one of these setups, do your poor little betta a favor and get rid of the peace lily, get him some proper foods, and start changing his water every week. Bettas make great pets and are easy to care for but you need to be informed and do things the right way. Get your betta at least a gallon of water to live in and you will notice how much happier he is right away!
