The tech gods at Research in Motion keep refining their most popular product, the Blackberry. First, the Blackberry itself revolutionized PDAs for busy mobile professionals, with fast remote email access, sleek black body design with standard QWERTY keyboard, and T-mobile cell phone service. Then, the Blackberry Pearl brought RIM technology to the masses, with a more user-friendly interface, a choice of Cingular or T-mobile, front-mounted navigation trackball, digital camera, and other media multifunctions for nonprofessional consumers who want a more grown-up PDA than the Sidekick. The Blackberry Pearl, when it was first released, quickly became a must-have gadget for those gearheads who like having the latest and greatest high tech wireless gizmos before everyone else. But the non-QWERTY keyboard has been a sticking point for many people who rely on their PDA for dependable, wireless remote email. I've found the SureType keyboard to nearly always come through in the end, although a few common three-letter words may be misinterpreted. SureType has two letter options per key. Not a problem for me; a problem for those of you in a business that involves hundreds of incoming and outgoing emails a day. If you're in the habit of looking at the screen while typing, the mess that is Suretype before descrambling, can distract you from your busy work groove. The Pearl's front-mounted navigation wheel is a nice change though; enough people have gotten "Blackberry Thumb" from the standard Blackberry PDAs' side scroll wheel, that some hotel spas now offer a Blackberry Thumb massage for business travelers. A new high tech malady! Not the worst way imaginable of suffering for your work, but something to consider nonetheless. The latest Blackberry model to enter the burgeoning PDA market is the 8800. It maintains the sexy black body design of the 7000 series, as well as the QWERTY keyboard, reliable cell phone service, remote email access, text messaging, Bluetooth headset and other business oriented functions. This, without the bells and whistles of a PDA used for social, probably youthful users. This means: No digital camera, no cute colorful casement. The Blackberry 8800 is intended for mobile professionals, not starlets and heiresses. The RIM design team has moved the side scroll wheel to the middle, to replicate the Pearl's center nav wheel. I found it easy to adapt to this on the Pearl: Blackberry 8800 users will doubtless find the same with this trackball. And, the center navigation wheel allows for much more flexibility on the screen. Users aren't limited to scrolling up and down through their emails and calendars now. The 8800 can scroll horizontally as well. This new Blackberry trackball function really adds to it's usability. It's like a little mouse on the PDA, and I like it. When viewing a web page, or example, users can treat it just as they would on their laptops or home PC. What's new, besides the center nav wheel? Other Pearl features have been added to the Blackberry 8800, such as faster internet browsing and quick web page uploads, an SD slot (a Secure Digital reader for flash memory cards), and video as well as MP3 audio capabilities. A GPS mapping system comes standard with the 8800 as well. It's still as thin and sleek as ever, and the Bluetooth wireless network hasn't let me down yet. Business users will be very happy with the Blackberry 8800, once their thumbs stop instinctively trying to use a side scroll wheel.
