The purpose is to give the GB women’s team the chance to play some matches against French sides as well and an International match against Luxembourg, whilst getting a feel of such a major event by being around the competing teams and watching the matches. The first stage of the training camp has been based in Nantes, where Germany, Korea, Ukraine and Paraguay are playing the first round matches. The squad are able to watch all the matches in the 5000 seater arena and analyse and study each teams tactics and technical attributes.. Coach Morton Arvidsson has arranged a full programme of training twice a day as the guests of the St Sebastian club in Nantes before they move on to Beauvais, Paris on Wednesday to prepare for their International match against Luxembourg. The squad is comprised of UK based players, those in the Handball Academy in Aarhus, as well as players based in Europe. It also includes the 3 TID (Talent Identification ) players who have successfully completed their trial period and are now joining the development squad. The squad played a friendly training match against their host club St Sebastian on the first full day at the camp. The result was a 27 – 19 victory for GB but the team are aware they should have won more easily after starting poorly. It was a case of the players getting used to each other as there were a number of new players for this camp. After the slow start, the team started to develop their fast game, working on the counter attack and on the set plays utilising the line players to good effect. Britt Goodwin led the way with 6 goals supported by Captain Lynn McCafferty with 4 goals. Goal keeper Sarah Hargreaves had an excellent game saving 12 out of the 15 shots she had to face and frustrating the partisan crowd in the bargain. Yesterday’s afternoon session was watched by 100 school children, keen to see how the developing team from Great Britain was shaping up and several coaches from the area were also in attendance, eager to get some ideas from world class coach Morten Arvidsson. From Nantes the squad moves to Beauvais where they will watch matches from the Presidents cup and play a match against the French National Police team on the 6th December before playing their first international match in this new era.
