One of the all-time great Hunter Valley vintages, 2000 finished and led into a typical dry winter. No heavy rain until November, 130mm (5 inches). Excellent vine growth and fruit set. No rain between mid-December and late January 2001 (38 days) enabled timely spraying and vine training. Ominous clouds built up over the last days of January and by February 10 135mm (5.5 inches) had fallen. Semillons were harvested in perfect condition over that time and the wait was then on for the Shiraz. (ILR stands for Iain Leslie Riggs, the winemaker) Alcohol 11.3% pH 3.15 Region Hunter Valley - NSW Vinification Harvesting is all by hand. The fruit is crushed, chilled and pressed immediately. Neutral yeasts for the fermentation and bottled in July. Only stainless steel, no oak and no malolactic fermentation. TASTING NOTES Colour Excellent, bright green/yellow colour, still youthful Nose The aromas dont show a lot of development with lemongrass and tlc Semillon fruit. Palate Entry onto the palate shows clean, zesty citrus fruit and just a hint of softer nutty development. The vanillin edge is the precursor to the classic toast that aged Hunter Semillon develops. A long finish with lime acid fruit flavours. Cellar Has a great future. Recommended Food Asian, soups and light meat dishes.
