Both mom and twins are "doing great," says Roberts' spokeswoman, Marcy Engelman. No further details about the birth or the size of the babies were released Sunday. Last week, Roberts told USA TODAY that the twins were due in January, but twins usually are born premature. Roberts had spent the last six weeks of her much-publicized pregnancy in enforced bedrest, anticipating the birth. That's where she was, at her home in Los Angeles, when she talked about her second big production this week: the arrival in theaters Friday of Closer, her new movie about love and infidelity from Oscar-winning director Mike Nichols. (Related items: Closer trailer | AP video: Double joy for Julia Roberts) In the movie, Roberts plays a photographer who cheats on her doctor husband (Clive Owen), with a writer played by Jude Law. But in real life, she is happily married and thrilled to be the mother of twins, which run in her family. And the movie industry's biggest female star says she couldn't have played Closer's complex Anna if she weren't so content in her private life with husband Moder. "If I wasn't secure and happy and had found my place in the world, I don't think I would have felt comfortable exploring this in a movie," Roberts says. "I wouldn't have felt comfortable exploring that plight if I were exploring it in real life." On the day of her interview, she wanted the world to know that she and her then-unborn twins were fine. "Things have gone incredibly well, knock on wood," she says. "We're at a point now where there just aren't enough hours in the day to count our blessings, really." Not a jot of morning sickness, no swollen ankles or leg cramps or complications of any sort for the lucky Oscar winner. "Never got sick," she says. "I've heard horror stories about people who have a sip of water and then throw up for four hours. But I come from hardy stock. I'm Southern. That must have something to do with it." Director Nichols jumps in at this point. He's on hand to join in the discussion of another birth, that of their film Closer, the grim relationship drama based on a play by Patrick Marber. The movie is seen as a potential Oscar candidate. Though the director and star later engage in a serious discussion about the process of making the movie and the complexity of the characters, right now Nichols is teasing Roberts about her tough constitution. "Hillbillies, you and my wife," he says, referring to TV journalist Diane Sawyer, his wife of 16 years and a native of Kentucky. Roberts, who was born in Smyrna, Ga., barely pauses: "Right, me and Diane. We're hardy girls." The talk returns to a pregnancy homonym: berth. As in finding one's haven, romantically. Nichols says: "We can only look back on the pain that is involved in the search for our final berth, that terribly painful process which is part of the first half of your life before you embark on what really is the great adventure: two people who belong together." Ever the adventuress, over the past dozen-plus years Roberts has teamed up with a host of leading men. She was married for just under two years to country singer Lyle Lovett in 1993, engaged to Kiefer Sutherland and most recently dated Benjamin Bratt for three years before marrying Moder on July 4, 2002. Along the way, there were romances with several others, including actors Liam Neeson, Daniel Day-Lewis and Matthew Perry. Taking stock of her life now that she's 37, Roberts has no desire to be the runaway bride whose image was constantly in the tabloids. "I have got to a place in my life where I've learned to really appreciate security and love and confidence," she says. "I'm an old lady. I'm about to have kids. I don't need to seem cool and interesting and crazy and on the edge." Hardly anyone's idea of an old lady, or a hillbilly, the leggy actress has referred to herself as "an ordinary person who has an extraordinary job." Articulate and well read, with additional homes in Taos, N.M., and New York City, she's also an extremely rich woman: She earns $25 million a picture. She says the glamorous life ascribed to her is nowhere near the truth. "I wouldn't be able to survive what people imagine my life is like," she says. "Unfortunately, with the machinations of the press today, everybody seems so disappointed that we're normal." Co-star Jude Law says of Roberts: "She obviously carries the extra burden of people assuming they know a little bit about her. But she's quite simply very down-to-earth and professional and a very bright actor." She does acknowledge being grossly overpaid: "Do the boys get paid more? Yes. But do we all get paid too much? Yes!" Her acting career began with Mystic Pizza in 1988, and her breakout role came in 1990, when she starred in the blockbuster hit Pretty Woman opposite Richard Gere. She made a big splash with My Best Friend's Wedding in 1997 but hit a career high in 2000 when she received a best-actress Oscar for Erin Brockovich. She has vowed to work on anything Brockovich director Steven Soderbergh comes up with for her. He directed her in 2001's Ocean's Eleven and the upcoming Ocean's Twelve, as well as 2002's Full Frontal. "I figure if Mike Nichols and Steve Soderbergh keep working, then I can go home and wait for them to call me," she says. Indeed, many directors clamor to work with her because her name on the marquee usually spells box office gold. She has made 34 movies in a 16-year career. Within the next two weeks, audiences will see her in both Closer and Ocean's Twelve, her first sequel, which opens Dec. 10. "My experience so far has been ridiculously nice," she says with characteristic understatement. She is excited to talk about her latest experience, that of a cold, double-crossing photographer in Closer married to a philandering doctor and having an affair with an insecure writer. "It doesn't speak well of the kindness in my heart, but I think I was the most judgmental of all these characters, particularly mine," she says. But, over time, she lost much of her antipathy. "Now, when I hear people saying all these things about how horrible we are, I'm like, 'Oh, come on, they're human,' " she says. The movie's story of passion, betrayal and abandonment among two couples "appealed to me in overall big thematic ways." Nichols' direction helped Roberts get over her natural inclination to judge the characters, she says. "Mike just sort of beat it out of me, in a way," she says. "He also made it safe for me to say, 'No one says these things. People don't talk like this.' " Speaking of language, Roberts is drawn to poetry and has lent her voice to recitations of the writings of Chilean poet and Nobel laureate Pablo Neruda. She is thrilled when Nichols quotes a line from one of his poems to illustrate the theme of Closer. "Love is so short," he says. "Forgetting is so long." Burbles Roberts: "I love that line. It's gorgeous." Nichols also paraphrases a quote from French novelist Gustave Flaubert, which resonates for him: "Flaubert said live as bourgeois a life as possible and put your wildness in your work." Does Roberts think this is a wise philosophy? "It is," she says, adding, "I want somebody, once in my life, to say to me, 'You quoted Flaubert.' "
