Buttonholes in garter stitch borders and picot edging allow the wearer to drape and fasten the edges at will. Materials: - 4 balls of elann.com Pamir - Color 129 Ebony (color A) - 2 balls of elann.com Champagne - 1 ball color 3002 Polished Gold (color B), and 1 ball color 3011 Polished Silver (color C) - 40" - 6mm (US 10) circular needle, or size needed to obtain gauge. Gauge: 16 stitches to 4" in two-color pattern stitch, unblocked. Directions: Using color A, cast on 190 stitches VERY loosely. Knit one row. Next row (right side) work a buttonhole row as follows: Knit 5, make buttonhole, *K14, make buttonhole. Repeat from *, ending K5. To make buttonhole: Bring yarn to the front of work, slip 1 stitch from left-handed needle to right handed needle, pass yarn to the back of work and drop it there. Slip another stitch from the left-hand needle to right hand needle, and pass the first stitch over it-1 stitch bound off. Slip the last stitch back to the left hand needle, and turn work. Pick up hanging yarn and pass it between needles to back. Now cast on two stitches, using a cable cast oninsert right-hand needle between the 1st and 2nd stitch on left-hand needle, draw through a loop, and slip this loop onto left-hand needle to serve as the first new stitch. Repeat. Before placing the second loop on the left needle, bring yarn through to the front, forming a dividing strand between the first and second stitch. Turn work again. Slip the first stitch from left-hand needle to right hand needle, then pass the last cast on stitch over it. Knit the next row. Begin Chain Stripes pattern: Row 1 (right side) With A, knit Row 2 With A, purl Rows 3 and 4 With B, knit Row 5, With A, K6, *slip 2 with yarn in back (wyib), K6; rep from * Row 6 With A, P6, * slip 2 with yarn in front (wyif) P6; rep from * Row 7 With B, repeat row 5 Row 8 With B, knit Row 9 and 10 With A, repeat rows 1 and 2 Rows 11 and 12 With C, knit Row 13 With A, K2, *slip 2 wyib, K6; repeat from *, end with slip 2, knit 2 Row 14 With A, K2, * slip 2 wyif, P6; repeat from *, end slip 2, purl 2 Row 15 With C, repeat row 13 Row 16 With C, knit. Work five repeats of Chain Stripes (10 rows of link stripes total). Work 3 rows stockinette stitch. (Wrong side) Knit one row. Buttonhole row-Knit 5, make buttonhole, *K14, make buttonhole. Repeat from *, ending K5. (WS) Knit 1 row. Bind off. Scarf ends-using crochet hook, single crochet in the first two stitches, chain two (do not skip a space). Repeat across the scarf end, ending in single crochet. Fasten off. Weave in ends and block, stretching slightly to open up the chain links. Because Champagne is a chainette yarn, a tiny dab of FrayCheck may be needed to help secure yarn ends. To make button fasteners, sew ten 13mm buttons to ten 15mm buttons, through eyes in buttons, resulting in 10 button fasteners. To wear as a shrug, fold the scarf in half lengthwise. Working inward from each cuff, fasten cuff and the next four button holes by placing button fastener behind one buttonhole, then fastening both layers over the top button.
